Hyper-V 2008 Server R2 RC (the free one without the GUI)

I have installed 2008 Hyper-V indicated in my subject line.

Now what do I do with it?
I do not have any copy of Server2008 to manage it from that
I do not have Vista with SP1
I do not have System Center

How to I work with this thing? I do not want any "expiring beta" management
tools. I want something that does not expire, does not cost more $$$, there
would be no point in that for me since the Hyper-V2008 is free why would I
then have to pay for the tools to use it?

What am I supposed to do?

If you don't want to use beta tools, wait for the thing to be released.
You can manage it from Windows 7 (also in beta).

It is pretty useless without remote admin tools.

What are you planning to do with it, anyway?

Hi Bill,
I was hoping you'd be the one to see this.
All I'm wanting to do is use it in place Virtual PC because so much of the
new 64bit stuff cannot be used a Guests in VirtualPC, plus it handles USB (I
think?), unlike VirtualPC. Nothing in "production" here is virtualized and
is not going to be anytime soon. It is just for my "test labs" that I use
to try to keep familiar with things,...much of the time the Labs are so I
can deal with the newsgroups that I am busy in.

So, we do not have Windows7, Vista, or Server2008 here,..and we probably
never will. It is gotten to be a capital project here just to order a case
of toilet paper,...by the time we ever upgrade it will be Windows9 and
Server2012. So I need remote management tools that,..one, don't cost
anything,...two, run from XP. I do have Vista at home,...but that doesn't
help me at work. But for even at home I could not find where to download
the tool from,...I found pages mentioning that it exists,...but nothing that
said "Click here to download".

Hyper-V does not support USB, and neither do the enterprise products
from VMWare...

As Bob said, there is still no USB support in Hyper-V. It is in VPC 7, but
that will only run in Windows 7 (and doesn't run 64-bit guest OS).

I haven't even looked at the R2 version of the standalone Hyper-V server.
I did have the pre-R2 version installed but didn't find anything that I
could actually do with it. It is basically a server core system with only
one role (Hyper-V). Unless you are crash-hot with the command line, netsh,
WMI and/or powershell, there isn't really much you can do with it. The
remote admin tools are a pain to install ,even on Vista or Win7.

I an running Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V which I administer by RDP so I
can use the full Hyper-V Manager MMC.

The RSAT tools for Vista SP1 are here.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

There are none for XP. There is a later version for Win 7.

Thanks a bunch Bill. That is helpful. I may try RSAT with my personal
laptop that has Vista,...but in the end I will probably dump the whole idea.
It is starting to seem to me that when it comes to virtualization technology
MS is wondering around lost in the woods in the dark with a blindfold on.
They had some really great potential with VirtualPC and VirtualServer,...all
they had to do was go to the next level with it an add USB and 64/ Guest
capability,...but they seem aimlessly wasting it away. Hiper-V on the Full
version of 2008 might replace VirturalSever but they don't seem to know
where they are going with VirtualPC,...I mean the stupid thing is,...one,...
only going to run on Windows7 (probably not the Home Edition?),...and
two,...still can't do 64bit Guests which is a joke,...they just managed to
score one good point with the USB.

VM Ware is looking better everyday,...but then I don't know anything at all
about VMWare,...I may get disappointed there too.

That is a pretty common complaint, especially from the developer camp.
The product group is well aware of it!

At the moment, the priority has been to get the new application
compatibility bits working so that people upgrading from XP can run XP apps
seamlessly in Windows 7. We will have to wait and see where they go from
there.

With Hyper-V the push has been to compete with ESX at the top end, so
clustering and quick migration are high on the list. USB support is well
down (because ESX doesn't have it either).

I really like Hyper-V in R2. Big improvements from the original release.
The new version of RDP in Windows 7 is nice, too. This will be ported to
Vista and XP as RDP 7 (I am beta testing these now).

I finally came up with a desktop machine I can load the trial 2008 version
on (full GUI),...but alas,...it doesnt have the virtualization features in
the CPU and BIOS,...so screwed again. So I when ahead and decided to use it
to try out the new TMG,...but alas,...no drivers for the 3Com nics in the
machine for Server2008,....so screwed even yet again.

Downloaded the trial for VMWare Workstation. The trial expiration turns out
it is not 30 days from the first install,...it is 30 days from the day you
downloaded it,...probably be three days left on it by the time I have enough
time to sit down and really mess with it. So screwed even even yet yet
again,...I think I am just going to go back to driving a truck for a living.

I have been trying out VMware EXSi. It looks promising.
