| | Hyper v on SBS 2008 Hi, I'm new to the Hyper-V thing so bear with me please (and thank you). My scenario: I have an SBS 2008 Server. It runs a quad core Xeon 2Ghz, hyper-v, 8GB ram, raid 5 - 500gb hdds - 2 x Gbit NICs (intel, if it helps). NIC 1 is the primary card which is the IP that email etc comes in to, DHCP and DNS for the network. NIC2 is not used. This server is a GC and domain controller. SBS2008 is the primary OS. I want to install two additional servers. My first question: Will installing Hyper-V stop the DHCP, DNS and GC/DC from working efficently and stop computers on the network from being able to locate this server? When I install Hyper-V - it asks me to select a Network card and suggests I keep one free for remote admin. Well, duh. My second question: selecting the second NIC - will that ensure that the Hyper-V will only use this network card and then not cause issues with the DHCP/DNS/Email/etc? Finally... The eventual outcome will be: Physical Box: SBS2008/email/DHCP/DNS ---- (via NIC2) ---- VM1: Win2008 with a OCS server, SQL 2008 server. ---- VM2: Win2008 with a third party PBX Voip Software - this will be runnign on the soft phones. Does this scenario work? Would there be a recommended 'other way'? Many thanks in advance for any help, Dominic |

| | Re: Hyper v on SBS 2008 Do you have SBS 2008 Premium? The Premium edition has a second Server 2008 Standard license which can be used for the parent partition. You would install the second server with the Hyper-V role. You could then run SBS 2008 in one child and a second instance of the Server 2008 Standard in another child partition. As long as Hyper-V is the only role installed on the parent partition the Server 2008 Standard license allows another install of the same license in a child partition. You could install other child partitions for other OS' depending on the resources of the parent. Your drive configuration and the amount of RAM are not optimal for running SBS in a child partition. In my tests SBS in a child partition needs at least 8 GB RAM and two spindles, one for the OS and one for the data. As you have surmised it's not a good idea to use SBS 2008 as a host for virtual machines. You will run into networking problems. Virtual machines work best when there are multiple NICs installed in the host. SBS 2008 only supports one NIC. -- Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience: Systems Administration http://www.vistahelp.ca/phpBB2/ "Dominic" <dominic@newsgroup-conlon.co.uk> wrote in message news BD9953A-9F34-4A97-B918-2060B2A83F0A@newsgroupQuote: > that helps for part A then: > > If I wanted to install a hyper-v, is SBS supported as a virtual server and > if so, what is the recommended way of going about it? > > thanks, > Dominic > "SteveB" <newsgroup@newsgroup> wrote in message > news:ejx%23s3MCKHA.1380@newsgroup Quote: >> SBS 2008 is not supported as the parent for child hyper-v installs. >> >> "Dominic" <dominic@newsgroup-conlon.co.uk> wrote in message >> news:B71821B9-CFEB-455E-95D3-68A7E144B9EF@newsgroup Quote: >>> Hi, >>> >>> I'm new to the Hyper-V thing so bear with me please (and thank you). >>> >>> My scenario: >>> I have an SBS 2008 Server. | | Re: Hyper v on SBS 2008 Yes, it's supported. There are limitations - no USB removable disk support in Hyper-V, so SBS Backup can't see USB disks. And no FAX modem support in Hyper-V. (both of these have workarounds, see www.fabulatech.com or other equivalent.) For SBS 2008, you really should be posting in one of the SBS newsgroups. The official one for SBS 2008 is a connect based newsgroup: news://connectnews.microsoft.com/mic...s.server.sbs08. You don't need a connect account to read the NG, but you do need one to post. Ultimately, there's not a whole lot different about running SBS as a child, with the caveats about USB and COM limitations. But do NOT try to run it as a parent. It doesn't work, and can't be made to work correctly, and isn't supported. -- Charlie. http://msmvps.com/blogs/xperts64 http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/profile/charlie.russel "Dominic" <dominic@newsgroup-conlon.co.uk> wrote in message news BD9953A-9F34-4A97-B918-2060B2A83F0A@newsgroupQuote: > that helps for part A then: > > If I wanted to install a hyper-v, is SBS supported as a virtual server and > if so, what is the recommended way of going about it? > > thanks, > Dominic > "SteveB" <newsgroup@newsgroup> wrote in message > news:ejx%23s3MCKHA.1380@newsgroup Quote: >> SBS 2008 is not supported as the parent for child hyper-v installs.
