| | Backin up guest VM off Hyper-V Server Hi All I'm running a Hyper-V Server 2008 (Free version) and have one Windows server 2003 guest running on it at the min. I'm using Windows 7 (VPC) with the Hyper-V Manager MMC to manage the guest. Just wondering what's the most complete way of backing up the guest OS given the above config? I'm not worried about the Hyper-V server, if anything happens that it can be easilly setup again. My concern is that any backup we take of the guest OS will allow a full restore of the entire VM should we need it. I've found the MS document on backing up virtual server but that seems to assume your running full Windows server 2008 with the Hyper-V role and in that situation I assume you can run backup software on the host OS? Thanks for any info you can provide. gR |

| | Re: Backin up guest VM off Hyper-V Server Sorry I think I see how, If I shutdown the VM using the Management MMC and then use the cmd prompt on the VS to copy the .vhd file off to a unc share somewhere. If I do that will that .vhd contain the entire VM (OS, Apps, setup etc) and more importantly if I copy that back using the same menthod as I copied it off, will I be able to run that on the VS in the same state as it was when I copied the .vhd off? Thanks again gR "gerryR" <gerryr@newsgroup> wrote in message news:O0KSRV6CKHA.4608@newsgroup Quote: > Hi All > > I'm running a Hyper-V Server 2008 (Free version) and have one Windows > server 2003 guest running on it at the min. | | Re: Backin up guest VM off Hyper-V Server If you've rebuilt the underlying server, you'll need to recreate the VM. The settings, etc, aren't in the VHD. But this is easy, all you need to know is what networking, CPU, etc you had for the VM and you can easily recreate it. (Note: this assumes you're not using saved states or snapshots. Those raise the complexity.) Once you've recreated the VM, pointing to the restored VHD file(s), you simply start the VM and all your OS, applications, etc., are intact and working as you'd expect. -- Charlie. http://msmvps.com/blogs/xperts64 http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/profile/charlie.russel "gerryR" <gerryr@newsgroup> wrote in message news:ex8Bzp6CKHA.5956@newsgroup Quote: > Sorry I think I see how, > > If I shutdown the VM using the Management MMC and then use the cmd prompt > on the VS to copy the .vhd file off to a unc share somewhere. > > If I do that will that .vhd contain the entire VM (OS, Apps, setup etc) > and more importantly if I copy that back using the same menthod as I > copied it off, will I be able to run that on the VS in the same state as > it was when I copied the .vhd off? > > Thanks again > gR > > > "gerryR" <gerryr@newsgroup> wrote in message > news:O0KSRV6CKHA.4608@newsgroup Quote: >> Hi All >> >> I'm running a Hyper-V Server 2008 (Free version) and have one Windows >> server 2003 guest running on it at the min.
