server 2008 hyper v install

Hi, I downloaded the free version of the newest server 2008 hyper-v for
testing and loaded it onto my Dell 1425 blade server.
The issue I am having is after loggin onto the server, I do not see the
desktop, just a blue screen.
What have I not done or done wrong?
Please help...

Re: server 2008 hyper v install

Hyper-V doesn't have a desktop, you need to administer it from another
PC.

Re: server 2008 hyper v install

Thanks for the response. I have attended classes on this but never with
remote viewing? The desktop should be GUI just like any other server.
If you have to administer remotely, how does one run programs and such?
I can remote to it but still see nothing on the desktop.

Re: server 2008 hyper v install

As Bob said, that is all you get with the free version. What classes did
you attend? Are you sure that they were using the free version, not Server
2008 with Hyper-V? That has a GUI interface.

Purchase Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V. That's the only way you're
going to get the full version.

Re: server 2008 hyper v install

I completely agree with Steve. You need to buy a full version of Windows
2008 in order to use HyperV Manger GUI. I believe you are using Hyper-V
version of Windows. That is not the full version. Take a look at the
following link:

http://www.microsoft.com/hyper-v-ser...s/default.aspx

In Windows 2008, Hyper-V is a server Role. After the Windows 2008 OS
installation you can add this Role. This will automatically install Hyper-V
manager.

You probably weren't using Hyper-V Server, you were more likely using
Windows Server With Hyper-V, it's not the same thing. Hyper-V doesn't
have a GUI like Windows Server, it's meant to just run VM's and that's
all.

All you have is a command line on the server itself. (I think
<Shift><F10> might open a command line)

The only thing that is free is the Hyper-V server and it does not have
a local GUI, it must be controlled remotely.
It is not the same as Windows 2008 Server. Windows 2008 server is not
free, you have to purchase it somehow, retail, OEM, volume lic, MSDN,
Technet, etc.

Re: server 2008 hyper v install

You can run the full version of 2008 in Evaluation mode for up to 240 days.
You will need to "re-arm" the server every 60 days as explained here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948472

You can schedule a script to do this for you automatically if you want.
