Virtual Server 2008, need intergrated components?

I'm in the middle of trialing Exchange 2007 in a VM enviroment, but we are
suffering horrendous performance. Some of this is probably down to me
restricting the memory to 2048 and only a single core on a quad core
machine.

But considering I have no users logged in it still feels surprisingly slow,
do I need to install the VM components into the guest machine or are they
installed by default within Server 2008?

Host Spec;
Intel Xeon 5420
10GB RAM
3x 300GB SAS Drives
Server 2008 Std x64

Guest Spec;
Single Core
2GB RAM
Server 2008 x68/Exchange 2007

Thanks in advance, Andrew.

Of course you need to install the integration components, they will
*greatly* improve performance.

Anyway, Exchange 2007 is quite a cumbertome beast... 2 virtual CPUs will
*really* help it. As for memory, have a look at the task manager in the
guest OS: is it's using more than 2 GBs, then yes, you need to give it more
virtual RAM; if it's using less than that, the problem is somewhere else.

That is my understanding as well.

2GB is minimal for Exch2007. It will run fairly decently with 2 cores
and 4GB, under that, the performance is going to be slow. There's big
difference in Exchange from 2003 to 2007.

2008 does have the integration components installed, but you should
upgrade them to the most recent version. When 2008 shipped Hyper-V
wasn't RTM.

Re: Virtual Server 2008, need intergrated components?

Presumably to upgrade them, it's simply enough to run the install wizard for
the components within Hyper-V?
