| | USB support really required in Hyper-V If there is a question, here is an answer. I have made a backup of my PC and stored the image in the USB hard-drive. Then, try to restore it to VM using a bare metal scenario on Hyper-V. As a VM cannot access USB drive directly, you simply cannot do bare metal restore. Result, you have to do work around ways such as share the drive on network and use restore with network support or mount another a VM with OS and attach new Vhd and copy image onto that drive and then attach to new VM. Whatever way, those definitely are more troublesome which we would have simply avoided with USB support. Here is my question back to you. What is the reason Hyper-V not to support USB directly? Benjamin Armstrong [MSFT] wrote: Re: Hyper-V and USB 19-Nov-07 What are your reasons for needing USB on a server virtual machine? | | Re: USB support really required in Hyper-V Teams make design decisions for a variety of reasons, not all of which we might agree with. In the case of USB support, I suspect it was a combination of resources and a lack of belief that USB was necessary for enterprise scenarios. I do know that a senior Hyper-V person posted a blog article at one point that "shipping is a feature". IOW, they had to make decisions about what to include in order to actually ship the product. Makes sense to me. There ARE third party solutions for USB support inside VMs. They don't work for bare metal recovery. OTOH, Hyper-V R2 supports hot add/remove of VHDs, which does work for bare metal recovery. And there are other, more enterprise oriented, ways to handle backups that also work. -- Charlie. http:/msmvps.com/blogs/xperts64 "Ted" wrote in message news:20091016247auto.tho@newsgroup Quote: > If there is a question, here is an answer. > > I have made a backup of my PC and stored the image in the USB hard-drive. > Then, try to restore it to VM using a bare metal scenario on Hyper-V. | | Re: USB support really required in Hyper-V Really? I have a live VM and try to hot add a VHD and all those options are grayed out in Hyper-V R2 Server 2008. Could you give some examples of backups that handle bare metal recovery of Hyper-V servers? | | Re: USB support really required in Hyper-V If it's a VM that you migrated from RTM Hyper-V, it probably doesn't have the SCSI adapter. | | Re: USB support really required in Hyper-V Not sure what the issue is, then. Running Server 2k8 VM, right click, Select Settings, select the SCSI adapter in the left pane, select add hard drive. Note: you'll need to be running Integration services on the VM, and using the 2k8R2 version of the Hyper-V Manager. -- Charlie. http:/msmvps.com/blogs/xperts64 "Ryan" <Mindflux98@newsgroup> wrote in message news:ha4sjp$jkd$1@newsgroup-september.org... | | Re: USB support really required in Hyper-V Hrmm.. those could be part of my problem. I'm running Hyper-V R2 Server 2008 (the free one) and the Hyper-V manager is whatever version is in RSAT for Vista. Charlie Russel - MVP wrote: Quote: > Not sure what the issue is, then.
