domain controllers on virtual machines

Hi all,
Can you run domain controllers as virtual servers or domain controllers on
virtual servers? If so, what are the pros and cons of doing so?
Thanks in advance of any help on this.

That is a bit of a hot topic, and you will get a variety of answers
depending on who you ask.

I have several DCs running on vms under various virtualization systems as
test rigs and they run fine. Even so I would not run my first/only DC in a
vm in a production environment. Other people have different views.

If your environment is SBS, and you want to virtualize (fully supported with
SBS 2008), then you don't have a whole lot of choice. Very few SBS
installations run >1 DC. Certainly I don't - I have better uses for my
second server (TS RemoteApps).

Re: domain controllers on virtual machines

Hi,

You can run DCs as virtual servers, but the suggestion is "in host servers
(server with virtual server, virtual pc or hyper-v) just run the
virtualization service", in fact if you are planning to run Hyper-V you
should deploy it on server core. I have a lot of business clients with
hyper-v environments and DCs running as virtual machines without problems.
