Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 (RC) upgrade to Hyper-V Server 2008 R2?

We currently have a few Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 RC hosts running which we
would like to get migrated to the official release. Is there a simple process
for upgrading to the latest revision of Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 from the RC
revision? Is this supported?

I am hoping we can simple perform an in-place rollover, so to speak vs.
removing the VM's, performing a fresh install and re-configuring everything
on the host. If it's not recommended, we can certainly go the fresh install
route. It will just take a bit more effort.

Hi,

It's possible upgrade from RC to RTM in Windows Server 2008 R2, this link
shows the upgrade paths:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserv...ion-paths.aspx, at
the end of the article "Windows Server 2008 R2 RC to Windows Server 2008 R2
RTM In-Place Upgrade is supported." Although the upgrade path is supported I
suggest you a clean installation. If you are worried about your virtual
machines try doing an "export" process for each virtual machine to a
external disk or other type of storage, this process export all the
configuration, snap-shots and other type of information about virtual
machine, then, import the virtual machines in the clean Windows Server 2008
R2 installation.

Re: Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 (RC) upgrade to Hyper-V Server 2008 R2?

That is along the lines of what I expected. However, This is for Hyper-V
Server 2008 R2 not Windows Server 2008 R2. These are 2 different product
offerings. Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 is a core OS with limited attack surface
and patch application.

Does this apply to the Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 as it did with Windows Server
2008 R2?

Yes, Hyper-V Server R2 should be the same, it's exactly the same code base.

Hi,

In fact it's supported:
