Hyper-V - shutdown VM - status shows "merge in Progress..."

When some of the Virtual Machines on a 2008 Hyper-V server are shutdown, the
status in the Hyper-V management console goes to "Merge in progress...".
This is updated now and then with a %.

This "merge" can take quite a few minutes.

    What is being "merged"?

Is there some configuration for the Virtual Machine or on the Hyper-V host
that can be made to either speed up or eliminate this "merge" operation?

It's perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question.

    Hi Bruce,

The merge process takes place when you have snapshots in a VM. When you take
a snapshot Hyper-V creates two files: .avhd file (snapshot) and new .vhd
file. So now, after a snapshot you have a parent vhd file, a avhd snapshot
    file, and child vhd file.

The "merge" process take the parent and child vhd files and merge in just
one vhd file. This merge process occurs just with dynamic vhd files.
