The only supported Microsoft virtualization product on Windows 7 is the new
Windows Virtual PC, though Virtual PC 2007 will also run.

Hyper-V will only run on a Server 2008 host.

Virtual Server will not install on Windows 7 unless you jump through some hoops
(and even then will not support SCSI disks).

VMWare Player and VMWare Server are both free, and both will run on Windows 7
(as will VMWare Workstation, not free).

I tried installing Virtual PC and it told me that it wasn't supported
on this edition of Win7. Since I have ultimate, I figured no go.

Will VMWare Player work with the MS SharePoint virtual disk?

But hyper-v is only Win 2008 or 2008 R2, right?

Correct. And that is what you need to really run Sharepoint Server, as
Razaman pointed out. Running a server vm on a client OS is not a great idea
for anything other than proof on concept or as a learning experience.

And when you install Hyper-V you lose one physical PC in the process
because the stand-alone (free) Hyper-V PC cannot do anything else.....
