VS2005 Admin page hangs

    VS2005 Admin page hangs

    I have a laptop running Vista64 (Dell Lattitude E6500).

All patched up, running Virtual Server 2005. It is a member of a workgroup,
    not a domain.

VS2005 was working fine, but now for some reason the administration page
hangs when you try to navigate to it.

I checked and all the IIS settings seem to be Ok. If you connect to the
'root' (http://localhost) you get the default IIS7 login page.

You can 'back door' the VMC client by using the client link, but no attempts
to connect to the admin site seem to work. The web page asks for user name
    and password, then just hangs.

I've poked around on the machine and everything seems to be ok, but we need
to be able to administer the VM's of course.

    Any ideas?

    Hi John,

did you already tried to reinstall only the website components
    (setup->custom..)?

    PS : SP1?

No, I haven't tried that - no software has been loaded on this machine since
    it worked though.

If it spontaneously quits working and needs a reinstall, then we still have
    a big problem.

    We'll try that though.

It could have been a security update for IIS. The admin page requires
    IIS6 compatibility.

You could try vmrcplus instead of the web admin page.

    Hello Bill,

To get the page to work, you will need to enable the local administrator
account on the local PC. Then, you will need to login to the website as
administrator after launching Internet Explorer as administrator. I created
a blog post about this a long time ago. Quite an annoying issue really...

    http://owsug.ca/blogs/brad/archive/2...rver-2008.aspx

This post is actually for server 2008 but for Vista, you need to enable the
    local administrator account.

    Hello Bill,

I had blogged about this issue some time ago.

    http://owsug.ca/blogs/brad/archive/2...rver-2008.aspx

My article was for Server 2008 but it applies to Vista as well with the fact
that you need to enable the local administrator account and login as that
after running Internet Explorer "As Administrator".

    Brad:

This probably isn't the problem as it worked perfectly, right up to the
point that it stopped. No settings or 'run as' have been reconfigured. It
is running the same way it was when it worked fine.

Enabling the local administrator account isn't terribly secure though. But
in any event, on this laptop it's running as an administrator without a
    domain.

    But I'll double check.

    Hello John,

I totally agree. I hated enabling administrator but ran out of time to pursue
a workaround. I included the components necessary for the IIS compatibility
in my post as well though .
