    Licensing

    Hi
1st I must say I am new to Virtualization.
We have a windows server 2008 enterprise version with 50 cals We havent
loaded it yet. We are researching for an appropriate server. One of my
associates told me that we have 'rights' to create 4 Virtual servers from
this one 2008 enterprise. She insinuated that the server licenses were
included. I cant imaging that so I disagreed with her. I thought maybe
wee have the 'rights' to load 4 but we must buy them all. I thought I
could find the answer quickly from MS but nothing spelled out. Could any of
you experts help me find the answer to this?

    Kind regards

    Craig

    I think she is correct:

"Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise: Run up to four software instances at a
time in virtual operating system environments on a server under a single
    server license."

    Re: Licensing

One thing to watch on the licensing for this.

You can actually install 5 times (once as the "host" OS, and 4 VMs) but
the ONLY thing you can use the "host" install for is to host the VMs.
Can't use it as a file share, printer share, nothing.

I called MS Licensing a while back, as we were considering using
virtuals to run some machines. Having only bought 2008 Standard (which
only allows for one virtual instance) it kind of defeated the purpose.
    So we didn't virtualize.

This is correct. Windows Server now comes with additional virtualization
rights. Specifically, you can load Windows Server on the physical compter
and enable the Hyper-V Role, and then you can install One additional virtual
machine of Windows Server in Standard Edtiion, 4 additional virtual machines
in Enterprise Edition, and an unlimited number of virtual machines in
DataCenter Edition. These are known as "1+" rights.

The catch is that the version installed to the physical computer can only be
used for virtualization, and the management of virtualization. No additional
roles can be enabled on that physical instance. So it's OK to enable Windows
Server Backup to backup the virtual machines, but not to add the DNS, DHCP
or AD roles, nor to use the version of Windows Server running on the
physical computer as a file server, print server, etc. If you do use
additional roles on that physical instance, then you lose the "1+" rights
and have only a single Server license (the host) in Standard Edition, or
four licenses for Enterprise Edition. Datacenter Edition, obviously, it
    doesn't matter.

    Re: Licensing

    Craig,

Indeed, when you buy a enterprise license you have the right to run 4 VM's
    on it.
But you can't use the host for anything but hyper-V.
When using a failover-cluster things get really interesting. I wrote a
blogpost on it a couple of months ago.
