rights. Specifically, you can load Windows Server on the physical compter
and enable the Hyper-V Role, and then you can install One additional virtual
machine of Windows Server in Standard Edtiion, 4 additional virtual machines
in Enterprise Edition, and an unlimited number of virtual machines in
DataCenter Edition. These are known as "1+" rights.
The catch is that the version installed to the physical computer can only be
used for virtualization, and the management of virtualization. No additional
roles can be enabled on that physical instance. So it's OK to enable Windows
Server Backup to backup the virtual machines, but not to add the DNS, DHCP
or AD roles, nor to use the version of Windows Server running on the
physical computer as a file server, print server, etc. If you do use
additional roles on that physical instance, then you lose the "1+" rights
and have only a single Server license (the host) in Standard Edition, or
four licenses for Enterprise Edition. Datacenter Edition, obviously, it
doesn't matter.
