want to have two modes available with different startup processes

i use my laptop both for work and for authoring music.

to author music (synthesizers, digital audio workstation, external sound
cards etc), i need to turn off tons of startup features and various services.
it makes a HUGE difference in the performance i get for my music apps.

but, it's an enormous pain to turn these things on and off all the time.

so, i tried to set up another user account, went into "Defender" to turn
things off while logged in as "Music" user, but it turned things off for
"Work" user as well.

is there really no way to switch/relog/reprofile/re-boot/re-whatever so that
I can have different configs?

i looked at System Configuration, but that looks more like diagnostics than
an operational approach to switching configs.
