Cannot revert (change back) folder permissions settings

Hello,

I've been racking my brain trying to figure this out all day and have come
to a stand-still:

This morning, I was trying to assign permissions to some folders on a
network drive. However, I mistakenly denied permissions to Everyone for that
folder. No biggie, I thought... I'll just set it back to what it was before!

Upon trying to do so, I got this error message:

\\vault\MediaShare\Music\Mixes\Misc is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this
server to find out if you have access permisssions. Access is denied.

So, I guess I effectively locked out not only Everyone, but the
administrator, as well? That's silly.

Anyways, I did a ton of investigation to try to figure this out and I tried
a few things:

1. "unlocked" the super Administrator login, which is hidden by Vista as
default
2. tried using the 'takeown' utility to force the permissions to allow admin
3. tried using BPACLer.exe to also force the permissions
4. fiddled around with the Security Properties on the folder

All of the above did not work. I either still kept getting the Access
Denies messages or I was unable to change any of the properties because
options were greyed out.

I am at a complete loss. If anyone can suggest anything, I am open to
anything.

Thank so much in advance.

Re: Cannot revert (change back) folder permissions settings

I'm getting the same issue but I denied access to my own folders and I'm the administrator. Now I can't do anything....

Did you ever figure this out?

Thanks.

Re: Cannot revert (change back) folder permissions settings

My first issue was that I couldn't get ownership as I was denied access but then I went to the link you gave and had a problem as even get cmd.exe to run as administrator off the pull down nor would my computer even do a search so after trying a few things I was able to finally get the cmd.exe file from c:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe and run it as administrator (why it worked that way must be because I didn't own the the pulldown?)

I then was able to finally take ownership. Hopefully my problems will go away.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Cannot revert (change back) folder permissions settings

Option 1 I believe worked so I didn't need to try option 2. Once I got over the cmd prompt issue, it was easy.

Now I'm having an issue with indexing and search failed to initialize.

One suggestion I found was through Control panel indexing options advanced to do both a restore defaults and rebuild. But I get a message that

"Indexing is reduced due to user activity. If you choose to rebuild now, the index will be unavailable and will not be rebuilt until indexing is restored."

Should I hit OK? Is there another way as I know this may take hours.

Thank you for the great advice.

Try reinstall Windows Search http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...wssearch4.mspx
It it don't help,go to Start>>Search>>services.msc stop & disable Windows Search service. This service isn't very needed.

Re: Cannot revert (change back) folder permissions settings

I think you've been the only tech person who has actually got my issues resolved on the first shot.

Hoping there won't be any more.... Still stuck with Vista......

Working on updating an older ME computer to XP. Wish me luck.

Thank you.
