standard user accounts stopped working

My standard user accounts worked fine until recently. Now, when my children
log in, they get a blank screen -- no desktop, no icons, no cursor, nothing.
I changed their accounts to administrator accounts, and the accounts work
again -- although, of course, my kids can change things that I don't want
them to change. Anybody else have this problem? Did one of those relentless
Windows updates mess up the user accounts? How can I get the Standard User
accounts working again?

Hi Puzzled Dad,

I'm not sure what may have caused this, but you might just create them new Standard User accounts and transfer their old files to the new account within your Administrator account. When you have everything transfered over, just delete the old user accounts.

I'm having the same issues as Puzzled Dad and I tried the solution that was offered above. Unfortunately it didn't fix the problem.

I also attempted to use "sfc /scannow" from the CMD.EXE program to repair any corrupt files but was greeted with the message that it was unable to repair them and there would be a log (which i dont understand).

Does anyone else have any ideas as to what could be causing this to happen? or how i can fix it?
