Restore "Downloads" folder from recycle bin

I deleted the user profile "Downloads" folder. It is sitting in the recycle
bin, but Vista won't let me restore it. Whenever I click the "Restore this
item" in the recycle bin, it flashes and the folder stays. I could create a
new folder but I'm interested in restoring the contents of the deleted
"Downloads" folder. I suspect this might have something to do with the new
"Integrity Levels" in vista, I've tried lowering integrity for all the user
profile folders, but no luck.

I'm using Home Premium and logged in as Admin. Thanks for your help

Hi Juan,

Give this a try to see if can help you.

1. Open the Start menu.
2. In the white line (Start Search) area type "shell:downloads" (no quotes) and press Enter.

This will create and open a new user "Downloads" folder.

3. Now see if it will let you restore it from the Recycle Bin. If it does, you will need to allow it to "Replace" the other one.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Re: Restore "Downloads" folder from recycle bin

Shawn, Thanks for the reply. I've tried what you suggest and I can see no
difference. When I type "shell:downloads" or any other "shel:..." command in
the Start Menu, I press enter and nothing happens. The start menu still shows
and no windows are open, no new folders get created.

If I create a new folder using windows explorer, the folder gets created
with the "New Folder" name, and it won't let me change it afterwards. As you
see, there might be other things going around.

My original problem with the deleted "Downloads" folder, I actually got
around by opening an "elevated" command prompt, going to the recycle bin
($Recycle.bin) and copying the contents to another folder. After that I
recreated the Downloads folder in the %userprofile% path, made it readonly,
edited the desktop.ini and everything is back to normal.

Like I said, this is a workaround, I still don't understand why when I'm in
graphic mode, aka, explorer, I'm not allowed to do much, maybe is running
with a lower integrity level? I tried running explorer as Admin (using Run
as...) but, no luck. Vista is a big mistery for me in this early stages...

Thanks for your help.

Juan,

I'm glad to hear that you got it back. It is strange that it would not let you restore it from the Recycle Bin. I deleted mine to as a test, and it restored without a problem. Hopefully it will not happen again for you.
