task manager wont start

I turned on my computer this morning and when I right click the tool bar at
the bottom of the screen the "task Manager" is grayed out. I tried MS help
for vista and it when the program was attempted to start it says the
administrator has this locked out. I only have one user on this machine and I
am set as the adminstrator. Does anyone know how I have to reset this so I
can gain access to the task manager?
Thanks

Hi Brian,

This will show you how to enable the Task Manager again. Be sure to run a full virus and anti-spam scan on your computer to be safe. This is a symptom of a few of them.

Re: task manager wont start

Shawn, thanks for the quick resonse.
I tried resetting the task manager and it was alreaded disabled so it should
be working. I have AVG antivirus and Windows defender running as well.
Neither have detected a problem. scans are done daily. So I setup a guest
account and the guest account can access the task manager but the admin
cannot. I tried the links as through for "group" and checked it in regedit
both are set for "disabled"
Any ideas?
Thanks

Brian,

In Group Policy you want it set to disabled to enable the Task Mananger again, but in the registry you want to delete the "DisableTaskMgr" value. If you did do this already, then you can try creating a new Administrator account to see if Task Manager will work in it. If so, delete the old Administrator account from within the new one.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Re: task manager wont start

You could try good, old fashioned, Alt-Ctrl-Del, and lick on Task Manager
from there if that works.

Re: task manager wont start

Shawn, I found the problem, it was related to changes in the registry. I
simply did a repair and took the registry back about 5 days. This removed the
registry problem and I now have my task manager back and operational.
Thanks again
