Re: Disk Management

Hi Nigel, I have a opened a Formal Complaint with Lenovo and will keep you POSTED in the case they come up with a solution (so that you may be able to incorporate it in your thinking / analysis). Anyway, I sincerely appreciate your help and hopefully lots of users will be able to benefit from your Herculean efforts.

Re: Disk Management

Hi Bob,

Just to keep you up to date I think I have a way, (untested by me so far), to move the Program Files,(or 3rd party apps,at least),and Winsxs folders plus the Virtual memory File which on my setup would clear about 16GB the methods look sound although a little scary. It should also be able to move use user APPDATA and the Windows Udate Filestore, which are two other major users of drive space, but need more research

I would like to find a machine to try it on (other than my primary machine,, just in case). will also try to condense each part into a script of some kind to ease the process. a lot of this is from people who have Vista working on an E-PC and USB sticks so does show what is possible

will keep you informed

Re: Disk Management

Hello Nigel, you cease to amaze me with your wealth of knowledge and my first thought is if in fact you have "broken the code" and (after testing have confirmed that you) have figured out how to free up space on the HD, you should be able to market (sell) this to algorithm to one of the PC manufacturers. As I previously mentioned, I am "doing battle" with Lenovo on this and the Lenovo Community message board indicates that many many other users have the same problem so I have to guess Lenovo has some of its' best people working on it and should be very willing to to obtain all the help that they can get. Just a suggestion Nigel and I will be checking back periodically to see how you progressed. Right now I am busy trying to figure out an IE7.0 problem but that's another issue, something else to keep me busy.
Thank you again for all your efforts Nigel,
Regards,
Bob

Re: Disk Management

Hi Nigel, just wanted to give you an update. Lenovo advised me that they are planning to release an update that will reform the "C" Drive (which currently is Partitioned to a 30Gs where Vista and the OneKey Recovery program reside and a 270G partition or "D" Drive where programs, apps, data,... files are kept), into one big "C" drive which the end user could do what he/she wants with. From what I understand (which is not much), the only thing that will happen is that the 300G "C" Drive that was Partitioned will be reformatted and no longer <factory> partitioned. I am not sure if the OneKey recovery program will be included in this update and when I asked them if I could skip the updated and just delete the OneKery programs from the "C" partition they said no, that removing the OneKey recovery program will make Vista unstable. Anyway, I thought I would give you an update and thank you again for straightening me out.
Best wishes,
Bob
