Hi, as a pastor I am on a limited income and it is very expensive for me to
keep upgrading and yet i know what is going to happen. i will eventually be
forced, because of other programs upgrading and eventually your support
fading to upgrade to Vista. The problem is this, I take mission trips to
help people in Africa. I train pastors who deal with AIDS everyday and one
of the ways I do this is by taking my presentation files along on my laptop
to share with them. This . So, with the new Vista I am pretty sure that my
notebook will not run it and that means getting a new one. But that is money
I do not have to go on the trips or to help them once I get there. I just
simply can't continue in this costly upgrade cycle.

Why would you even consider upgrading? In your position, doing the type of
work you do all upgrades should be postponed until Microsoft announces an
end of support date for XP that is within a year. Then look for a new or
used notebook that has Vista preinstalled by the OEM. Consider using open
source Linux where you can get everything free. Only do this if you feel
comfortable using an OS where support is more difficult to obtain. The same
for Vista in that when it comes out the average person will not understand
how to copy files from their old systems to the new, so wait until the
knowledge about Vista has spread and many books and articles have been
written. Never depend upon a Microsoft operating system until service pack
1 has been released - usually it is service pack 1a before they get
something that will work. XP only because useful with service pack 2.

Not sure why you have any concerns, at this point in time?

If you have Windows XP installed, Microsoft has announced that support for
XP has been extended to 2014. Just because a new version of the operating
system has been released, doesn't mean that your applications will magically
stop working?

Windows has always been developed with a dedication to supporting legacy
programs and applications.
There are still people in the world that are using Windows 95 and the
software that was installed with it.

Well you both have good points, you have to understand a couple of things.
ONe is I am not talking about now I am talking about the next couple of
years---when I say a limited budget i really mean it.

Also, yes there will be legacy machines, indeed they have them there. Here
is the issue, while I am there the students/pastors want me to teach them the
newest software---as this is how many of them are able to support themselves
while they minister.

Well anyway, i am just saying that the continued pressure on pocketbooks is
very difficult to cope with, thats all.

I realize that I am not being forthright enough. Most of the computers in
Africa are in public places-(ie internet cafes)-and they use pirated
software. They will be using Vista AND Office 2007 before you know it. My
students who do not own computers will be using these public computers.
Therefore they will want to know how to use Vista And OFFIce 2007. I teach
them that it is wrong to use pirated software but they have no choice in the
matter if they want to use public computers---that is any computer. Sorry
but this is life in Africa. I am doing my best to change the few I can
influence but it is a systemic problem

Let me be really clear--I do not use, nor have I ever used pirated software
and i have taken a stand against doing so in as many forums as possible.
