Vista - network Access

Using a mix of computers: Vista Business; Premium; XP Pro; Media Center; &
Home - Issue not all computers see one another and access does not go between
Vista and XP - I read most of the post and did not see reference items. I
am on a home secured network. Looking to share resources and have turned all
the sharing that I could find on. I also ensured that at least one folder
and printer was shared on each resource. All advice is appreciated.

In order for me to get my mix of XP and Vista computers to see each other I
had to go into the network settings and change the group name from MShome to
WORKGROUP. That is what the Vista was already named. I couldn't change that
computers group name, but I had to change the other 3's XP networking group
name to match the Vista machines workgroup name. Only way I could get them
to connect and be visible to each other.

Thanks, I do have all on the same network - I have changed the Vista Machines
to the name of my home network. I have worked some of the issues by turning
off the Vista machines requiring a pass word to access. I am now able to get
into all but one machine running XP Pro SP2. I have gone from the XP Pro
Machine into the Vistas but as of now it is just one way. Still not giving up.

The workgroup name is a bit of an anomaly, on older systems at least it only
affects what you see displayed and not necessarily what you can access. In
any case MS Networking seems to have it's issues - add some wireless and
between MS and Cisco (Linksys)things only get worse

My usual recourse is to set up one admin and password that's common to all
machines and then sign on with that. It seems like once you can get the
things to communicate for the first time it is easier to step back from
there with permissions etc. Just giving everyone permission to do everything
does not seem to kick in. This is bad security of course but my experience
is that no network setup ever goes as expected
