How come your operating system is incapable of using a news reader?
Or the OS can but you are unable to set it up?
Ask an appropriate newsgroup for your OS, they can help.

I have no problems with Vista now and have not the months I have been using
it.

Here's what I did: When I first upgraded to Vista I disabled the UAC (via the
Control Panel Users applet) as there were just too many new/changed things to
deal with and UAC just made life even more frustrating. Then after I got
everything running, I reenabled it and learned the few special things I had
to deal with with UAC enabled. Now it rarely gets in the way.

Perhaps this will work for you too?

Don't know about that person to whom you replied but I had it on for 24
hours and it never stopped darned coming up. Asking me if I wanted to open
this for sure and that sort of thing. Really VERY annoying. Of COURSE I
wanted Outlook when I clicked on it. Of COURSE I wanted Vista Mail (news
reader) when I clicked on it.

The reason there are FEWER rpoblems (not "no problems") in Linux or Macs is
becasue they are so non-existant in the community at large that the hackers
don't even bother with them. Trust me, if they become more pervasive in
businesses you'll see their security go to crap as well.

I do not see UAC for those programs.
I may have in the pre-release versions of Vista, but not now.
In the earliest of the Vista Beta I disabled UAC because it came up so often
it slowed almost everything I did.

But since using RTM and all set as I like, I rarely see UAC.

Are you using RTM or a pre-release version of Vista?

I am visiting this forum for the first time and and amazed by the problems
reported with Vista. This OS needs some work.

jp is right. For the most part, people are stuck with it. There is little
choice.

Jupiter try buying a computer without Vista.

Sure you can wipe it and replace it with a Linux distro, and I hear Dell
will give you your money back if its not activated but good luck getting that
done promptly.

I admit I'm a Linux guy.

jp just for grins, download and burn a copy of PCLinuxOS and give it a try.
Its eye candy blows Aero away, it will recognize all your hardware, and the
software that it comes with will meet most if not all your needs. One by one
most of my friends are switching to Linux and not looking back. You can
still have the option of dual-booting for those must have Vista programs.

Jupiter do the same thing. You might just be surprised.

The bottom line is if you have to have a learning curve to use Vista and
upgrade hardware and software as well, why not try Linux on your system for
free.

I was wondering what this "PCLinuxOS" was - at first, I thought it was
generic term for Linux, so I Googled and see it's a new-to-me distro:

I like that it can be tested as a CDR-based (non-installed) OS, and
that it's Mandrake-based (Madrake 10 was the Linux I "knew" best).

What's the download process like? I ask, because it hit my 3G cap
before the end of each month, and some previous Linux downloads were a
nightmare of slow "torrent" byteflows and aborted doenloads.

Quite - perhaps because the main reason why folks can't go Vista on
new PCs is a dependence on XP-bound applications that switching to
Linux won't solve. Can it safely read and write NTFS? I'd like an
NTFS.SYS-independent maintenance OS (as some NTFS corruption will BSoD
NTFS.SYS on first contact, killing Linux "Capture", Bart, WinPE,
everything except some crusty old DOS+driver solutions).

As a CDR-based mOS, it's of particular interest to me.
