Vista - Cannot access other computer? Says I need permission

I have two computers next to each other, plugged in to same router, on same
workspace network. In xp I could just browse the other computer and do
basically anything I wanted to it.

With the same setup, I can no longer access the files. I get the message:

sara-pc//c is not accessable. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you
have access permissions.

Access is denied.



how do I fix this! both computers are logged on as administrator and both
computers' drives are set to share with everyone...

You are experiencing the same problem as I am...If you find a solution let me

I saw this in another posting and saved it for my use - hopefully it
will help you as well.

Windows Vista prevents local administrators from using their
administrator powers over the network. This results in the inability to
remotely administer a computer using filesharing and tools that use
similar technology (such as the computer manager MMC snap-in and the
administrative shares, such as C$). However, this DOES NOT affect Remote
Desktop in any way. Also, domain-level admins are not affected.

For example: you have an admin account set up on VISTAMACHINE, and log
in to VISTAMACHINE from your other computer XPMACHINE via the network
(net use or whatnot), and try to access VISTAMACHINE's administrative
share C$. Technically you have access to that share; however, due to the
token filtering, you are returned access denied, since the system is
ignoring the fact that you are an administrator.

To allow administrators local to a computer to use their administrator
powers when accessing the Vista computer remotely, you can follow these
steps:

- Click start
- Type: regedit
- Press enter
- In the left, browse to the following folder:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\system\
- Right-click a blank area in the right pane
- Click New
- Click DWORD Value
- Type: LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy
- Double-click the item you just created
- Type 1 into the box
- Click OK
- Restart your computer

You need a check of your workgroup name on your home network,
they must be identical. The xp home network workgroup name is "mshome", the
vista workgroup name is "workgroup" you can change either one but the vista
is very simple to change.

Re: Home Networking Only, you have vista and an xp or 98se (check home net
name in (98SE) first, briefly the name for
the default network in xp was "mshome". The name in Vista for default home
network is "workgroup".
Your mission, if you choose to accept it is to rename either to make them
identical (workgroup name)
To do it in vista, Left Click on "Start" Button on Vista Logo, scroll up to
Welcome Center, click on same, In the top section with (your computer info)
click on "Show More Details"
A new info screens is displayed (system) scroll to bottom of page, you'll
find computer name section, including workgroup name. If you verified that
XP network name is mshome, click on change settings button,
on System Properties pop screen, first tab is "Computer Name" the third item
on screen is to rename computer, change domain, or workgroup, click on
"Change" button on top Computer name is defaulted to whatever when Vista
installed it, Member of domain, disregard. Last item is Workgroup: you
should see it named WORKGROUP, RETYPE MSHOME, VOILA CLICK OK, CLICK APPLY,
CLICK OK AGAIN. YOU HAVE A NETWORK BETWEEN VISTA AND XP.

Hopefully that resolves that problem.

Did this first off and it has no effect on the "Access denied" message
