Windows update and Administrator Account

Running Windows Vista Ultimate on a Dell. I cannot set my Update to automatic
because it says some settings are managed by the Administrator. I AM the
Administrator. I cannot get the updates to configure correctly because the
Automatic Update is greyed out.
What can I do?

Re: Windows update and Administrator Account

Click Start, type gpedit.msc and press ENTER
Goto the following branch:

Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Windows Update

Double-click "Configure Automatic Updates"
Set it to "Not configured"

Note: If it is already set to "Not configured", enable the Policy and revert the setting back to "Not configured". This resets any registry based Policy if set already.

Re: Windows update and Administrator Account

Linda, gpedit.msc is most definitely included in Ultimate. Are you by any
chance joined to a Domain?

Re: Windows update and Administrator Account

Group Policy Editor is certainly included in Windows Vista Ultimate. Type "winver" in Start, Search box and press ENTER. This shows the Operating System / edition installed in your computer.

To remove the AU/WU restrictions, you may use this REG:
http://www.winhelponline.com/fixes/wupolicy_remove.reg

Download wupolicy_remove.reg and save to Desktop.
Right-click "wupolicy_remove.reg" and choose Merge
Click "Continue", and click "Yes" to confirm the Merge.

Linda,

>> I know I have Vista Home Premium....

You said "Running Windows Vista Ultimate on a Dell." in your original post. Anyway, the REG file applies to all editions of XP/Vista. See if you're able to access the Automatic Updates options after applying the REG file.
