| Guest | RE: Changing the Owner Of PC Go to Start, type regedit, press enter and navigate to : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion and in the right pane, right-click RegisteredOwner and Modify the value. Create a system restore point before making the change, just in case you have finger problems. You can also change Registered Organization. | Guest | RE: Changing the Owner Of PC Hi, I just got my laptop Saturday - had Best Buy set it up for too much $$$. Anyway, they spelled my name incorrectly. I was able to do this operation as you directed and I am now spelled ok as the administrator. However, I've noticed that my printer files still have the incorrect spelling. Looking through some of the stuff I see there is a whole bunch of files that still show the incorrect spelling. Is there some other "master" area that I can either change or delete it? Thanks. | Guest | Re: Changing the Owner Of PC No. You can change the name of your account in the display areas, but you cannot change the account name on the account's file structure. There are just too many references to these files/folders on the system. -- Ronnie Vernon Microsoft MVP Windows Shell/User "dnichols618" <dnichols618@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:0882826F-66BC-4EF4-A73F-2CDD48AC06E5@microsoft.com... > Hi, I just got my laptop Saturday - had Best Buy set it up for too much > $$$. > Anyway, they spelled my name incorrectly. | Guest | RE: Changing the Owner Of PC I tried this, but it didn't work. I was able to change the name that I see on start up and in most places where I see the user name, but when I open the taskbar, the user name is different. Why is it so hard to change in vista? Is there any other way to do it? My story is the same as the others replying to this post. | Guest | RE: Changing the Owner Of PC Mo The original question was "How do I change the registered owner"? To which I replied. You can change names in applications, e.g. Word, by going to the personal details, etc. "Mo" wrote: > I tried this, but it didn't work. | Guest | Re: Changing the Owner Of PC Hello, I obtained information on how to change the "Registered Owner" from the link below. Just remember to backup the registry, in case a restoration of the registry is needed, if something goes wrong. http://www.computerperformance.co.uk...teredowner.htm This is information taken from that page. Vista Registry - RegisteredOwner and RegisteredOrganization When you buy a machine with Vista pre-installed, sometimes OEM's leave their name in your copy of Vista (or XP). A little research reveals that such names are stored in registry values called: RegisteredOwner and RegisteredOrganization. Here is a registry hack to edit the value to reflect your organization. As a bonus, I have an amusing story featuring Evans Twp and his experience of RegisteredOwner. To see what I am talking about call for 'winver'. In Vista, click in the Start Search dialog box, and then type: winver. Topics for RegisteredOwner Instructions for Editing RegisteredOwner Key Points for RegisteredOwner The Story of Evans Twp and RegisteredOwner Instructions for Editing RegisteredOwner or RegisteredOrganization Launch Regedit (See more details on starting regedit) Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\. Alternatively, in Regedit, click the Edit menu, Find, and then type: RegisteredOwner in the dialog box. Double click on the REG_SZ called RegisteredOwner. Change the value to a name of your choice. Repeat the above instructions for RegisteredOrganization. Exit Regedit and launch Start Search, type winver in the dialog box. Key Points for RegisteredOwner Is RegisteredOwner a value in HKCU** or HKLM? Answer: HKLM Do you have to add a value, or modify an existing setting? Answer: Modify Is it a String Value or a DWORD? Answer: String (REG_SZ). Do you need to Restart, or merely Logoff / Logon? Answer: neither, just type 'Winver' in Vista's Start Search dialog box. ** HKLM is an abbreviation of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, and HKCU is shorthand for HKEY_CURRENT_USER. These acronyms are so well known that you can even use them in .reg files, Vista will understand and obey the registry instruction. ...................................................................................................................................................................................................................... | Guest | Re: Changing the Owner Of PC Does this change the owner name of computer or just Vista Registered Owner? When entering winver my name appears! However, as other posters, I too became victim of Best Buy. Geek Squad performed "set-up" and put in someone else's name. I am afraid to return for their "repair". Everytime I see User/other person's name, etc., etc., I have this over whelming sense of victimization...yes I am a newbie. I have no problem dumping everything and starting over if that is what I need to do. I'm just not sure if that will correct my issue. Thanks "Tom" wrote: > Hello, > I obtained information on how to change the "Registered Owner" from the > link below. > Just remember to backup the registry, in case a restoration of the registry > is needed, if > something goes wrong. > > > > http://www.computerperformance.co.uk...teredowner.htm > > This is information taken from that page. > > > Vista Registry - RegisteredOwner and RegisteredOrganization > When you buy a machine with Vista pre-installed, sometimes OEM's leave their > name in your copy of Vista (or XP).
