Transferring a product license?

A friend purchased the retail upgrade version of Vista Home Premium for
£149.99 from PC World and they still have the receipt. Having installed it,
their system died. They couldn't get their system working so went out and
bought a new system with Vista already installed. Their old system is still
sitting in a corner dead.

PC World wouldn't pay a refund on Vista because they had opened the box.
They passed the box onto me and I've used it to upgrade my system. However I
can't get it registered because it has already been registered (although
never really used). Is there any way I can get the license transferred to me?

I can get the receipt, plus any required acknowledgements from the original
purchaser. Surely this £149.99 hasn't been a total waste of money?

If the online activation fails, you simply need to use the telephone option
to activate Vista with that product key. The automated part of the telephone
activation will also fail, just stay on the line until a service
representative answers and let them know the circumstances. The will
complete the activation for you.
