| Guest | Bug when reorganising the Start Menu I have been reorganising my "Classic style" Start menu and have come across what appears to be a bug that is preventing me from moving files. I am using the default start menu directories: C:\Users\*My Username*\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\ C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu When I'm moving, sorting, deleting and sorting folders and shortcuts in the C:\Users directory, everything is fine. However, when I try to move a folder within the C:\ProgramData directory that contains subfolders, after clicking "continue" on the two security dialogs that appear, which is annoying but works ok, I get a third message which says "You need permission to move this folder", giving the options of "Try again" or Cancel". Clicking try again simply returns the same error message again and again. This doesn't make sense as I am an Administrator and have full read/write rights over the folder. There are no other User Acounts on my machine anyway. What is interesting is that this error does not occur when moving, renaming or deleting a folder which is in the ProgramData file but does not contain subfolders, only on ones that have additional folders within them. It also does not occur when moving, renaming or deleting a subfolder, as long as it does not itself contain another subfolder, which is what makes me think this is a glitch. Thank you for your attention. ---------------- This post is a suggestion for Microsoft, and Microsoft responds to the suggestions with the most votes. | Guest | RE: Bug when reorganising the Start Menu I do the same thing as you - using the classic start menu and rearranging the folders and shortcuts in Explorer, instaed of drag and drop dirctly in the start menu itself. I find it's much easier to do this by starting Explorer this way: right click on a shortcut for Explorer and choose "Run as administrator". Then you don't get asked for permission with every action. |
