Why is the Vista Folder Customization/Templating so FUBAR????

Riddle me this, why does Vista think this folder is of type "Pictures and Videos"?

Whoever implemented this feature needs to be made aware of the annoyance they are causing a lot of people. Where is the button for that "we share your pain electric shock buzzer" cause I want to press it (a lot).

Come'on how hard can this be? How about this as an idea. Don't mess with the view of any of my damn folders except for the directories Pictures and Videos in my user dir. Ditto for the Documents view. I sure hope this folder templating mess is fixed in SP1!!!

So change it. It takes less time than writing this note.

I change it. It gets changed back. It gets rather tiresome.

Well, I can sure sympathize with you. But, it doesn't seem much of a riddle. Every version of Windows since 3.1 (I never tried the earlier versions) had the problem of folders doing what they want to after awhile. Then I suppose the riddle is why is it still happening after 20 years? I guess I just got used to it.

I seriously doubt Microsoft is going towards the direction of fixing this. They seem toi have no idea about who we are and want we want from an operating system. All they seem to know is that no matter how poorly they treat us we still keep coming back.

In my experience the folder type detection was wrong far too often.
I finally just disabled it, as described here:

It was possible to work around it in XP... Vista is resistant to attempt
to maintain control, at least in my own experience.

I'm hopeful that SP1 will change something.

You can get more with a kind word and a 2x4 than just a kind word.

As did I a long time ago... unfortunately the *default* template now seems
to be "Photos & Videos" and - believe it or not (I'm sure you will!) You
cannot change the template associated with certain folders (e.g. Windows),
which always use the default.

Why on earth I should be barred from making even cosmetic changes to such
folders is beyond me.

If anyone knows how change the default template back to All Items I'd love
to know (the absence of "discovery" is a wonderful relief though!)

As a general complaint though, folder (view) settings should be stored on a
per folder basis, and not in a size limited list: if I change a folders
appearance that's the way I want THAT folder to appear next time...

Hi Keith,

They added the "Automatic Folder Type Discovery" feature to help users by automatically changing the folder template to match with the files. It was suppose to make things more convenient, but we see how that went. (haha) Luckily this feature can be disabled. Method two in this tutorial will show you how to disable it. The download option is the easiest since you will most likely need to reset the folder view settings to.

Re: Why is the Vista Folder Customization/Templating so FUBAR????

Brink - as per the tutorial, you set the All Folders to "Not Specified"...
could it be given a value so that the default is a template of choice (as I
said above, mine seems to be Photos and Videos - I would like it to be "All
Items).

What values correspond to the existing Folder Templates?
