How to change default file view in Windows in "Open" window

Every time I do a save as or an open or an attach, the window that opens
sorts the files in some weird ununderstandable format. I just want it to open
in alphabetical order each time and allow me to sort it by date optionally.
Without me having to do 4 steps: Select Details, move the window larger,
resize the columns so I can see the date, hit date to sort it.

Is there a way to change this default. I have both Vista and XP Pro and
would like the solution for both if possible. I saw some suggestions on line
that involved setting it, holding the control key then immediately rebooting
but they never seem to work.

Thanks in advance

Hi Storm,

You will need to reset the folder view settings. Method Two in this tutorial will show you how to do it. The download option is the easiest way. This will allow Vista to remember how the window was set when it was last closed.
