| | Renaming a folder? Running as Adminstrator and only user on this machine with UAC off. Sometimes I cannot rename a file folder that I created even if I do not have that folder open to begin with. I keeo getting the error that I do not have permisson. I need to open other un-related folders then go back to the one I really want and rename it. Sometimes this takes three attempts jumping around folders until I can do the rename. This folder I created on a second drive partition and contains nothing for programs only a data file such as a word document, graphic, etc. The files themselves are not open. I'm not reading anything here that seems to be the same problem. This is wasting a lot of time for a simple action. I appreciate Vista trying to protect me from someone else, but protecting me from myself is a bit much especially when I'm not even dealing with an application folder just a simple data folder. Thanks. Bart |

| | Re: Renaming a folder? Hi, Gold3nMan. The "read-only folders" situation is quite different. See this KB article: You Cannot View or Change the Read-Only or System Attribute of Folders http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;326549 The key phrase from that article: "Unlike the Read-only attribute for a file, the Read-only attribute for a folder is typically ignored by Windows, Windows components and accessories, and other programs." | | RE: Renaming a folder? I am not sure about that. I'll check again tonight when I'mm back home. I don't think this should be the issue. As I've done more reading since posting this I think it has something to do with the permissions on the drive, but I haven't totally rooted around in those to see what might be out-of-whack (if anything). I have an administrator user and another user which is me. This must have been set up by the computer place. I am the only user and I noticed there were different permissions between the two. I'm wondering now if it is flopping around between users (which makes little sense) so sometimes I can change the name and other times can't. For now it is just another mystery to me and I hope that I can find the source of the problem. It is just one of those frustration things that shouldn't be there. Thanks. | | Re: Renaming a folder? So what is the solution then? I tried a few more things tonight. I made sure the folders weren't "read only" which I don't think makes any difference and I made sure that I had full permission set on the drive. Yes, when I try to rename a folder it will not let me. I tried opening a folder and then changing the name. Says I do not have permission. I tried then closing the folder and renaming. Says I do not have permission. I then open another unrelated folder and then go back and THEN I can rename the folder. This obviously shouldn't work this way. If it is strictly a permission issue then where do I, as the only user on this machine grant myself control over this OS? This is one of those annoying things that I'd laugh about if it weren't for all the other annoying quirks Vista seems to have on top of this one. Thanks. Bart "R. C. | | Re: Renaming a folder? I was wondering (a little off the path) if you had ever received an answer as to how to make certain you had full control and access to your machine, when you are indeed the only user and person user it, and are the administrator for it. I often run in to stupid UAC problems with this Vista Home Premium machine and often find myself wanting to kick it. Thanks! j0n@xxxxxx Jonathan -- jcmcelroy75 Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |
