| | Can I set Explorer like in XP address bar? Vista Ultimate (and probably all the other versions of Vista) have a bizarre idea of how address bar navigation should be. It doesn't follow established search metaphors found in web pages, Mac systems, Linux systems, and all of the previous Windows systems. To say the least, it is not intuitive. Furthermore, it doesn't allow customization to revert back to the XP-style address bar. Vista has some sort of crazy "breadcrumb" and list box control which replaces the address bar. More importantly, it doesn't truly reflect the hierarchical structure of the file system. For example, if I open up "Documents", the breadcrumbs start with the user name, and not with the "C:\" root and then the location of "Documents." Once you're in "Documents", you can't navigate "UP" to it's PARENT folder. Yes, the "UP" button we all loved is removed from Vista Explorer. I'm going to buy XP once again, and retire Vista Ultimate...and and cut my losses for shelling out so much money. Purchasing Vista Ultimate (with Office Ultimate 2007) was the worst software purchase I have ever made. I wish it wasn't true. The Vista Start Menu has a horrible system also. It's doesn't follow the time-honored metaphors of expanding flyout menus that have worked JUST FINE for years on many operating systems, including all Windows systems. Now, for any suggestions. Is there a button in Explorer for "Classic View?" That would make my day. |

Is there a button in Explorer for "Classic View?" That would make my day. You can click on a empty area in the address bar to see the old full path instead. This tutorial may help give you more information on the Windows Explorer address bar. Windows Explorer Address Bar You could also change the color scheme to "Windows Classic". You can see how to do this here. Afterwards, just open Folder Options -> View and check "Display the full path in the title bar (Classic folders only)". Color Scheme Hope this helps, Shawn |

It will not work in "Windows Aero" or "Windows Basic". After you change to Classic, just open the Folder Options -> View and check "Display the full path in the title bar (Classic folders only)". | | Re: Can I set Explorer like in XP address bar? It just sounds like another guy with a chip on his shoulder. It just amounts to Vista doesn't run like XP. It doesn't - it's not XP. XP didn't run much like DOS either, and you got all the same grumbling then. The world moves on faster than many are ready to go with it. Vista is a learning curve, and if you just decide to climb the hill, it goes pertty easy. I was forced to change, so I decided it was just another challenge. Life would be pretty dull without them. So, we get posts where folks spend many words telling us how Vista SHOULD work, when in the end what matters is how it DOES work. We can't change it. You can only give good advice like you did, and then they want to come at you along with everything else. | Vista Enterprise 32bit | Re: Can I set Explorer like in XP address bar? Greetings, I tried the recommendations to get the old, full address bar back in Explorer, but it didn't work. I had previously set the theme to Windows Classic, but had failed to find the folder setting. So, I set it and then closed my explorer windows and opened a new one up...but it was still the "breadcrumbs." Any ideas why it isn't working? The settings are sticking, but they aren't being honored. Is it because I'm on Enterprise? This is my work laptop that I was forced to move to Vista on. I share dropping_the_ball's angst about Vista, but have no choice. I have been using Windows for over 10 years...got my first exposure in High School with Win 3.2 (I think that was the right version). So I'm used to large degrees of change within various Windows' versions. My preferred OS is Ubuntu (right now...really anything *nix), but I cannot limit myself to that narrow market. I'm a computer professional and Windows is a huge market presence (duh!). Anyway, any help or ideas are greatly appreciated! Last edited by omnialive; 02-19-2008 at 08:59 PM..
