Folder Preview Trouble!!

Ok, I have tried clearing the thumbnail cache and that did not work, but here
is my problem. Obviously I am using Vista. If it makes a difference this
problem is on my laptop. I have a portable hard drive with all my songs on it
(G. So, several of my folders on the hard drive do this. My Dragonforce
folder (G:\Songs\DragonForce) has three different sub folder
(G:\Songs\DragonForce\Inhuman Rampage, G:\Songs\DragonForce\Sonic Firestorm,
and G:\Songs\DragonForce\Valley of the Damned) Now all three of these sub
folders only contain the songs from that cd and the album art. For some
reason the songs show as thumbnail of the album are, which in turn causes the
preview of that particular sub folder to show a preview of the album art
twice instead of once...I think. Also, I can not figure out why the
G:\Songs\DragonForce folder shows a preview of just a folder. I have gone
through all the options and can not figure out how to fix these. Please
help!!!

Re: Folder Preview Trouble!!

Well, it is the holiday weekend! There are lots of good folks and in a day
or so maybe someone will be able to help you.

But the simple fact is that Windows (Any Version), from the beginning, has
NEVER been reliable in retaining folder settings. A while spent browsing
older posts here will show that Vista is no different in that respect. Maybe
it should be different, but the reality is that it is not. And, since
Windows 3.11 I have always hoped the next version would solve the problem.
That's more than 20 years, and it still exists as a problem. I don't think
it makes much sense to continue the battle with Windows on that basis.

You would probably be much happier in the long run if you downloaded any of
the dozens of excellent music and/or picture managers available, often for
free. Because in the end, Vista just isn't going to satisfy your demand.

Re: Folder Preview Trouble!!

Not really. I have just learned to live with Windows quirks. And I have no
idea how to fix this. I doubt anyone does...

Start by wandering about in Softpedia or other places like CNet or ZDnet. I
have no experience with them, so I can't comment.
I use Xnview to do most image handling, and organize into folders with
helpful names. You can hang tags on everything, but I don't bother, in spite
of having 4GB of photos in about 110,000 files.I just browse the folders.
For heavy editing work I use GIMP. Both are free. Good luck!

Hi Resurrected,

Perhaps this tutorial will help you.

Folder Preview Picture Change

A folder will have a folder preview instead of a image if it contains subfolders in it. The tutorial above will show you how you can change this to what image you want.

Re: Folder Preview Trouble!!

Thanks for the reply Brink. Even though I did not mention this, I tried all
of those tutorials that I though might have helped before I posted, and
nothing did help. When I pick a new picture that I want to be the new
preview...nothing happens, it just stays as it was.

There have been cases where you would need to click the "Restore Defaults" button first, then click the "Choose File" button for it to accept the new image.

Have you already done this?

Re: Folder Preview Trouble!!

Yes. I have tried to restore the defaults and it also does nothing. When I
clear the thumbnail cache, it clears it out, but puts them back as they were
when i open the folder.

Re: Folder Preview Trouble!!

It may have something to do with it being a portable hard drive and Vista not keeping up with the settings for it very well.

Try turning off the thumbnail views and then clear the thumbnail cache again. Logoff and logon, then turn the thumbnails back on. This should reset the thumbnails.

This tutorial will show you how to turn off thumbnails.
