can one abort sync manager?

I first wanted to make a folder from my desktop available offline on my
laptop and marked the share "Make available offline". Only after having
triggered this I suddenly had concerns and double checked re. the size
of that folder and its subdirectories and indeed: it's huge!

Since it would essentially fill up my laptop's entire HD I wanted to
abort the sync operation, but apparently this isn't really stopped. I
noticed that in the background sync manager continues to copy, even
though I meanwhile removed the "Make available offline" checkmark from
that folder again.

Can one somehow tell Sync Manager "stop and forget it"?

Michael
