Re: Can't rename files or folders

Is it in your documents/pictures folder. Some folders are not realy where vista says it is.

Where are the files/folders you are trying to rename? Give the path -
ex. C:\Users\youruser\Documents. If you are trying to work with anything
in Documents and Settings, My Documents, etc. that would explain the
difficulty since those are only virtual locations (junctions).

Waiting for your clarification.

OK, you'll need to give us more information to work with. How about
telling us if this problem always existed, for starters. If this is a
sudden problem, what changed between the time things worked and the time
they didn't? What version of Vista? Is this an upgrade you did or a
machine that came with Vista preinstalled?

Remember that we can't see your computer and so you need to give us a
good picture of the machine and its recent history. These links will
help you with what details to include:

Hi Wings,

It may be a permissions issue. Try to take ownership of one of the files as a test to see if you can rename it afterwards. If so, then you can take ownership of the entire partition, USB key, or the files you want to modify.

See Method Two in this tutorial for how:
Take Ownership of file

Re: Can't rename files or folders

I recently bought a new computer that came with a trial version of vista,
then before it expired I took the computer to a guy that would install a free
version for me. that is when things started going crappy. that is when i was
unable to change the name of a file anywhere. anytime i create a new file - a
pop up comes up and says the file folder does not exist even though it will
remain there as a folder called new folder

There is no such thing as a free version of Vista.

Return your computer to factory condition and to whatever operating system
it came with - presumably some version of Windows XP. Refer to the computer
manual or to the computer mftr.'s website for how to do this. Then if you
really want Vista and the computer will support it (check on the computer
mftr.'s website to be sure), purchase a copy of Vista from your favorite
online or brick-and-mortar store. If you need help installing it, have
someone other than that "guy" do it.

Re: Can't rename files or folders

You bought your computer with a trial version of the OS that is used to make the computer usable.
Under the consumer agreement act; if you buy an electrical product that does not fullfill the needs of the consumer or which the item as bought (or something like this), you can take the item back and get a refund.
I have never heard of a computer getting sold with a trial version of the operating system for which it depends on.
