| Vista Business x64 | Photographer needs help Hi: this is my first post and I know I am going to sound a dweeb, but... My PC is an E6600/4Gb 800 Corsair Asus PB5 m/b. I have 6 HDD's ( SATA) from 150-500GB and as you might expect, a large number of files! Most are from 12-15Mb Canon RAW (.CR2) and as my hard drives fill ( I have shot 15-20 000 in the last month) I need to be able to move them to bigger HDD's and archhive the old ones. ( NO, even Blu-Ray discs can't keep up! I have tried copying them to an external (USB 2.0) but have had issues with missing properties, so I am loath to try this in Windows. I need to be able to move the contents of whole hard drives. Is this possible? From what I can see, the only ( reliable) way appears to be to move them in smaller units, i.e 5 folders at a time. Does anybody know of any 3rd party software that can do the job. Idon't want to clone, just move large chunks of data ( typically 20-300 Gb) |

This will help will large file transfers. See Step Two here: Auto Tuning - TCP/IP receive level You might also turn off the Windows Feature "Remote Differential Compression". | | Re: Photographer needs help If you had error messages to the effect that not all properties could be copied to the USB drive, that was probably because the USB drive was formatted as FAT32 rather than NTFS. Reformat the drive as NTFS to get rid of the message and allow transfer of all the information. I just moved about a couple of dozen folders of 30 GB total of pictures to a USB NTFS formatted drive without problems. Not much compared to what you need to do but worked fine for me. Perhaps if you could provide more information on what goes wrong when you try to transfer from HDD to HDD someone could provide additional advice. For instance there is a limit on the number of things (files or folders) that are at the root of a drive. (128-256 if I remember properly). | Vista Business x64 | Re: Photographer needs help Many thanks for that guys. Maybe I was optimistic, but.... I really wanted to move an entire HDD, so I ctrl+a'd all the folders (17 with 141Gb data) and dragged and dropped to the new one. Acting on advice, I did them 5 at a time with success. yes the USB Xternal is FAt32 (WDMyBook500), so that may be the problem. Many thanks for your help |

| | Re: Photographer needs help Hi, yellowdog53. In addition to the other points, you might want to try Xcopy.exe or Robocopy.exe. I've used Xcopy for years, including in Vista Ultimate x64, but Microsoft has now "deprecated" Xcopy in favor of Robocopy (which I have not used). Either of them will allow us to copy whole drives of files, including their attributes and other properties. In a Command Prompt window, type Xcopy /? or Robocopy /? for a list of the switches that you can use with the commands to get the results you want. RC -- R. C. | | Re: Photographer needs help Or, see microsoft.public.windowsxp.photos for info on SyncToy (a Microsoft utility) I use SyncToy: v1.4 - it works every well for me (V2.0 is now in beta). I use it to sync and archive large quantities of photo's to a Thecus N5200 RAID storage device (1.3Terabytes, but filling up!)... Now if someone only had a utility that would automatically tag photo's as "blurred"/badly exposed (beyond all rescue by re-levelling in PhotoShop) etc. it would help enormously with the process of "digital contact print" reviewing and I could ditch a large proportion of the images I haven't got time to review "manually" <g> -- Julian I-Do-Stuff Some Vista stuff, but mostly just Stuff at http://berossus,blogspot.com "yellowdog53" <yellowdog53.31g0m3@xxxxxx-mx.forums.net> wrote in message news:yellowdog53.31g0m3@xxxxxx-mx.forums.net...
