| | Sync Center and read-only files Let me begin by saying that I love the Sync Center included in Vista! The "Offline Files" feature is wonderful. I think the feature I like most is that it essentially allows me to have a virtual drive on my laptop (as opposed to simply syncing a specific folder on my primary drive). I am a software developer, and do most of my work on a desktop computer. However, I also use a laptop when visiting clients, and it's tremendously useful to have my files kept in sync automatically. However, the problem I've run into is that Sync Center does not handle read-only files properly. As a developer, I use VSS for my code. VSS marks files as read-only when they are checked in. If I check something out to my laptop while in disconnected mode, make changes, and check them in, the file is newer than what's on my desktop, but both versions are marked as read-only. Because of that, Sync Center is unable to push the changes to my desktop. What's worse is that when I attempt to "Resolve" the discrepancy, it appears to work (i.e. removes it from the "Conflicts" list), but then shows up as a conflict again the next time the sync is run (i.e. it doesn't really resolve the problem). Has anyone else experienced this? Is there any kind of work-around? I've sent this as feedback to Microsoft, but it feels like that's sending it to the great bit bucket in the sky. I don't expect an instant solution, but I'd love to hear if others are having this problem, and what people are doing about it. Thanks for reading! Brad. P.S. I'm well aware that there are other syncing tools out there, but the convenience and performance of Sync Center, together with the fact that it is included with Vista and provides me with a virtual drive, make me want to use it if at all possible. |
