The "vssadmin list shadowstorage" works for me - there was indeed not enough space.. because the "shadow storage" tooks about 30GB on my external backup device (i just wonder why??). After setting maximum storage to the minimum (300MB) on the external HDD the backup wen on as usual.

How to resize shadowstorage:
Code:
vssadmin resize shadowstorage /for=X: /on=X:  /MaxSize=300MB
where X is the letter of your external HDD storage.
