Search folder & Startup Menu

The Search item has disappeared from the right pane of my Startup Menu. I
have no idea how I lost it, but it was there when I first got my computer
(Vaio, running Vista Home Premium). I now have to go to Help & Support to get
access to it. I use the Advanced Search facility, so I can't just open up any
folder. Does anyone know how to pin it back onto the Start Menu? I've even
tried going to Open Taskbar & Start Menu properties and selecting Use Default
Settings on the Start tab - no luck! Help, please! (I think I do mysterious
things sometimes because I'm not quite used to the touchpad on my notebook.)

Would be grateful for advice.

Re: Search folder & Startup Menu

Search link (present in the right-hand side of the Start menu) is removed when you install Windows Vista Service Pack 1. Also, the Search context menu item is removed.

There are other ways to launch search. For more information, read this article.

If you wish to restore the Start menu Search link, check this post for a registry edit.

Re: Search folder & Startup Menu

You have most probably installed SP1 and that's why it is gone.
You can however create a shortcut and pin it to your start menu:

Press Windows + F

This will open the search window. Left to the text Search you will see
a small magnifier icon (search).
Drag it with your mouse, pull it to a free space on your desktop and release it.
Now you have a Search shortcut on your desktop.
Move or copy the shortcut to a safe place from where you cannot accidentally delete it.
Now drag this shortcut with the mouse again, pull it over the Start Button and release the icon over the button. If you've done it well you'll have a permanent search item
in your start menu's left pane.
Unfortunately you cannot move it to the right pane or open it in advanced mode by
default.It takes another click.

Re: Search folder & Startup Menu

Here are other simple methods to bring back the search window:

1) Windows Key + F
2) Click the task bar and hit F3 on the keyboard
3) Open an Explorer window and hit F3

You can also restore the context menu search item:

Open Regedit and navigate to

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\find

Rename the REG_SZ: 'LegacyDisable' value to something else like, say, 'LegacyDisablex'

Now if you right click any item on your computer search as an option will be enlisted again

Re: Search folder & Startup Menu

Way cool, Ramesh and raymundka! What a wealth of helpful info you guys have
given me - thanks so much. In fact, Windows-F does it all, really -
brilliant! But I'm going to look carefully at those links you gave me,
Ramesh, and get better informed.
