| Vista Ultimate | My Videos Folder has multiple errors after upgrade Hi all, I've seen the posted solution on finding the "My Videos" folder after an XP to Vista upgrade, but I have an extended problem: My "My Videos" folder appears as a shortcut to *somewhere* and when I try to follow the shortcut it tells me I need administrative permission, but since I'm the computer's sole user and administrator, when I give myself permission that I already have, nothing happens. Is there a way around this? Look below for the two error windows that show up followed by the folder's security tab... ![]() ![]() ![]() I have Vista Ultimate upgraded from XP Home OEM w/SP2 and have tried using the shell: command in the search field, with identical results. |

| | Re: My Videos Folder has multiple errors after upgrade Try navigating directly to the "Videos" folder. The Vista folders beginning with "My" are not real folders. They are junctions (shortcuts) which point to the corresponding folder e.g. "My Music" points to "Music". The Junction Points are in Vista for backward compatibility of pre-Vista applications. Pre-Vista applications (applications written for XP and 2000) look for folders that are no longer used in Vista. Folders with the “My” prefix such as My Documents, My Pictures, and so on. There are also folders in your user profile that have been changed in Vista, and pre-Vista apps might be looking for the old folder structure during installation. If you don’t set the option to Show Hidden Files in Windows Explorer, you will rarely even see the Junction Point folders. ------- *Report back, please* "Eratosthenes" <Eratosthenes.37fpw5@xxxxxx-mx.forums.net> wrote in message news:Eratosthenes.37fpw5@xxxxxx-mx.forums.net... | Vista Ultimate | Re: My Videos Folder has multiple errors after upgrade Thank you for your help, but it didn't find a "Videos" folder (at least not the one I want). All it did was find a different, nearly empty folder that I made a few days ago to house new videos. That, and a few hundred other video files from all over my hard drives (but even then far from all of them). |

| | Re: My Videos Folder has multiple errors after upgrade Eratosthenes The 'My Videos' junction points to the C:\Users\your name\Videos folder. If all of your video files were in the 'My Videos' folder in XP, prior to the upgrade, they should now be in that folder. -- Ronnie Vernon Microsoft MVP Windows Desktop Experience "Eratosthenes" <Eratosthenes.37gkg0@xxxxxx-mx.forums.net> wrote in message news:Eratosthenes.37gkg0@xxxxxx-mx.forums.net... | Vista Ultimate | Re: My Videos Folder has multiple errors after upgrade My problem is that a "Videos" folder doesn't even exist. All that's there is a shortcut the "My Videos" that won't open. | | Re: My Videos Folder has multiple errors after upgrade You need to completly ignore any folder with the 'My' desination. These folders are junction points and not actual folders. They are only there to redirect older applications that may be looking for them to the new location in Vista. The Videos folder is a default folder that is created with every new user account. If it's not in the location I described, something must have happened to remove it? If you remember any of the missing video file names, try searching the hard drive for those files. If you find one, the others may be in the same location. You might want to unhide any hidden folders, before you search. In Windows Explorer, go to Organize/Folder and Search Options. In the View Tab, select the 'Show hidden files and folders' option. -- Ronnie Vernon Microsoft MVP Windows Desktop Experience "Eratosthenes" <Eratosthenes.37gzq2@xxxxxx-mx.forums.net> wrote in message news:Eratosthenes.37gzq2@xxxxxx-mx.forums.net...
