No "Search" button on Start menu

Windows Vista Inside Out chapter 7 item on Searching from Search Folder
states the Search Folder (Figure 7-22) can be opened from the Start menu.
"To get to the Search box, open the Start menu and choose Search."

When I open the Start menu, I do not see a "Search" to choose, other than
the search box at the bottom left which does not open a Search Folder. What
am I missing?

Thanks.

Hello Bill,
You could have included the fact that you have SP1 installed. I'm sticking my neck out that this is the case. Please use the link below to restore Search menu on the right hand side.

t-4-2 Thanks for the reference. I think I'll keep the Help and Support and
Run... buttons. Since pressing the Windows logo button + f also opens the
Search Folder, I think I'll go that route.

Re: No "Search" button on Start menu

Hi Bill,

Search link (present in the right-hand side of the Start menu) is removed when you install Windows Vista Service Pack 1. Also, the Search context menu item is removed.

There are other ways to launch search. For more information, read this article.

Overview of Windows Vista desktop search Changes in Windows Vista Service Pack 1:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941946

If you wish to restore the Start menu Search link, check this post for a registry edit.

Another option is to Pin Search shortcut in the Start menu.

Hello Bill,
I believe you have made a logical decision. There are other revenues to run a search.
Perhaps you do not know that you can have a Search shortcut on your desktop. All you need to do is to click on the shortcut and go search. Click the link at the end of this post and see how the shortcut looks like. If you want it, go back to the "search restore " link I gave you, look for the Related Links section on that page, #8 is the one you need.

You can easly replace your sp1 version of "explorer.exe" file from the
windows directory with the original version used from a non - sp1 version of
vista and the search functionality will be completely restored to its
original state. No registry modification is needed.
