Opening Word files from Desktop in Vista Home Premium

After Vista Home Premium SP1 I cannot open Word files through desktop
Documents. If I open Word I can bring up files without any difficulty from
there. Also can't open attachments on Windows Mail. Was ok before sp1 but
this may be coincidence. Any advice? Rod.

Re: Opening Word files from Desktop in Vista Home Premium

Hi rodney,

Which version of Word you're using?
What's the error message you're getting when opening .doc/.docx files?

Re: Opening Word files from Desktop in Vista Home Premium

Does repairing Winword help? If not, inspect the .DOC file association
settings.

1. Download FileExtInfo.zip from here:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/fileextinfo.htm

2. Unzip the utility and extract the files to Desktop.
3. Double-click "FileExtInfo.exe" to run it.
4. Select .DOC file type from the list box
5. Click "View file association report"
6. Copy the contents of the report and include it in your reply.

Re: Opening Word files from Desktop in Vista Home Premium

Thanks Ramesh Repair didn't work. I got down to View file association
report, but it doesn't let me copy, only paste, so I don't know how I can
copy the contents to you. Is there a simple way to do this that I haven't
noticed.

Re: Opening Word files from Desktop in Vista Home Premium

Open the TXT file using Notepad. Press CTRL-A to Select all the contents,
and press CTRL-C to copy to clipboard.

Switch to your mail client/web based reader, and press CTRL-V to paste the
contents.

Re: Opening Word files from Desktop in Vista Home Premium

Hi Rodney,

My guess is that the DDE is not working (some app is blocking it)

Click Start, type "regedit.exe" and press ENTER:

Backup the following key and delete it.

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.8\shell\Open\ddeexec]

Go to the following key:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.8\shell\Open\command]

Then set the (default) value to:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE" /n "%1"

Exit the Registry Editor.
