| | Where did Windows Explorer go??? What is now called Windows Explorer in Vista has been crippled so that only the files and folders for the current user can be explored. Where is the replacement for Windows Explorer in Vista? I am looking for the tool that will allow an administrator to explore the entire hard drive, create folders and copy files to wherever necessary. I need to create a folder that will contain some executable and configuration files in a location where users cannot accidently find them and delete them. Thanks. -- ..Bill. |

| | Re: Where did Windows Explorer go??? I am with you 100% on this one. I can't seem to find anything. With the classic view Windows Explorer from XP, ME, 98, etc. I could see the folders on my computer, view them on a split screen, copy and move folders and files, and generally set things up to be wherever I want them to be. With Vista, I am completely lost. I can't even figure out what the other replies to your original post mean. Is there some reason why the function that Windows Explorer served was taken away when they created Vista? For example, if I right click on My Computer and then select Explore, I get a split screen that looks about like the Windows Explorer screen used to look -- files and folders on the left side of the screen, and files and folders on the right side of the screen. Now, suppose I click on "Desktop". The split screen disappears and I guess I am looking at the Desktop files and folders. But how do I get back to the split screen view I had? If I click on "Computer", same thing -- I'm in a single screen. I don't seen any icon or anything else to let me move up to the next level in the hierarchy/tree. I don't see any way to get back to where I started -- which was files and folders on one side of the screen and the ability to open a folder on the left side and see what's in that folder on the right side (like I used to be able to do in Windows Explorer). |

In fact, the whole issue I had regarding Windows Explorer in Vista, isn't a problem on the Vista laptop at work. I see the split screen, I can navigate like I always could with Windows Explorer in XP, etc. So, something must be messed up with my Vista laptop at home. |

| | Re: Where did Windows Explorer go??? I'm on my home laptop with Vista now and I can't get the Windows Explorer to work the way it should. I am guessing it has something to do with some kind of "View" setting I need to change, but I can't figure out what that is. I want to be able to use Windows Explorer and navigate among the files and folders with a split screen so when I click on a folder in the left half of the screen, what is in that folder gets listed on the right half of the screen. Any ideas on what settings I may need to change?
