| | Locked out of My Music Hi, I have upgraded to Vista RC1 from XP Home. I noticed that folders such as My Pictures and My Videos have been renamed to Pictures and Videos as they should be, but My Music remained as it was. I attempted to access My Music, but was told that I do not have permission to view the folder, and any attempts to gain permission failed. It is also worth noting that the folder has a shortcut icon and a size of 0 bytes. I can access Pictures and Videos, by the way. Any help would be appreciated. |

| | Re: Locked out of My Music Hello, My Music has been replaced by the Music folder. You should be able to find it under your user folder, which is accessible directly from the start menu. The "My Music" folder inside your Documents folder is not really a folder - it is a junction, and is there to point programs accessing it to the new location. These system-defined junctions won't let you double-click on them. -- - JB Windows Vista Support Faq http://www.jimmah.com/vista/ |

| | Re: Locked out of My Music Nope, there is no Music folder in my User folder. In the "Jack" folder, there is Pictures, Videos, Documents, etc but no Music folder. There is My Music, which must be one of these "junctions". The Junction is also there if I click Documents once inside my user folder. Also, in the start menu, underneath my user folder, the following are listed: Documents, Pictures, My Music, Games. I think it is worth noting the presence of "My" in the start menu. | | Re: Locked out of My Music try to make a new folder in your userfolder and name it "Music" - what happens after logout and relogin ? If nothing else gets you working : 1) make a backup of all your files 2) enable Administrator : rightclick "Computer" -> "manage"--> "Users/Groups" --> search Administrator and make it active ( deselect "Account is disabled" and give password policies to your needs ) 3) login as the Administrator 4) delete your corrupted UserAccount 5) make a new Account for you as User - Vista should then automatically make all the Subfolders the right way. 6) copy your backed up data to their new places. | | Re: Locked out of My Music Sounds like you found a bug. Do you get an access denied message when you click My Music on the start menu? Open a command prompt and then type: cd documents <enter> dir /al <enter> This should list My Music and then a location in brackets. What is this location? Try typing that location into an explorer window and see if that correctly shows your music folder. -- - JB Windows Vista Support Faq http://www.jimmah.com/vista/ |

| | Re: Locked out of My Music Clicking My Music on the start menu gives me a permission denied error, again. The path I was given by dir /al was C:\Users\Jack\Music. When I typed that into the address bar, I was shown an error saying that the folder does not exist. | | Re: Locked out of My Music Ok ... Go to c:\users\jack\ and see if there is any folder in there that is your music in it. If not, go to c:\windows.old\ and see if you can find your music folder. If you can find your music folder, copy it to c:\users\jack\music, and with any luck things will start working again. |

| | RE: Locked out of My Music hey, i just upgraded xp home to vista rc1 and i had the same problem. i tried all the things that were suggested on this post and i didnt have any luck at all. i finally started poking around myself and i found all my old files and i am currently moving them to another location. im hoping that after i move them into an actual folder (not a hidden one like where i found them) i will be able to redirect the music shortcut/junction? to the new folder. i turned off the user access control then deleted the entry for everyone under the security tab. after that when u click on the music link it will tell you that the folder does not exist. then i searched my hard drive for any mp3 files and my old files were found. they were in this folder C:\$INPLACE.~TR\Machine\DATA\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Music\ when i went to find this place through my computer, it didnt show up. if you right click on a once missing file in the search results u can open the location of the file. then u can click and drag to a new folder. i hope this makes sense. im still working on the last part but im cautiously optimistic :-) "JackS_77" wrote: > Hi, > > I have upgraded to Vista RC1 from XP Home.
