On my Win 2000 desktop, I use FreeDownloadManger with botjhIE 6 and firefox
3(using FlashGot)
Have not yet tried Firfox 3's built-n download nabager.

observations are correct.
Seems that one can pause and resume a download only in the current Firefox
session.
Close Firefox, or system crashes, or, ... and you are outta luck.
Also, do not have evidence that multiple streams are used for a single file.
If those observations are correct, then a real download manager is needed.
This one works. It's compiled for 32 bit, but works fine in 64 bit. It has a
lot of great features (resume, BitTorrent support, multiple download
streams, etc.)

Yes, I use FDM in Windows 2000.

I installed FreeDownloadManager yesterday.
Only issue was that it did not tell me that I had to reboot after the
install.
Otherwise, seemed to run well using IE 7
