where are files downloaded from IE automatically saved to?

    Here's the deal:

I downloaded a Word document from my gmail account and edited it. When I
was done with my edits, I closed Word. The program asked me if I wanted to
save changes to the file, and I said "yes." Word then closed. Only then did
I realize that I had not saved the file to my personal files. This has
happened to me with previous versions of Word, and I've always been able to
locate the temporary file in which the document is automatically saved.
After running multiple searches in Vista, I can't find the recently modified
    document. Any suggestions?

Wherever you told it to save them last. If you don't remember, then start a
new download of something, and take a look at the suggested destination.
That's where you last download went.

Vista search can be a challenge to newbies because it chooses what to index
and what not. Rather than climb the hill, there are a lot of freeware search
tools that will handle the more obscure searches. An example is Agent
Ransack which I prefer, but there are many others.

    Good luck.

I think I am running into the same thing. After opening an excel spreadsheet
from an email in outlook, I make some changes and to save it, I must save as
a new file in a temporary folder. The location of this temporary folder from
the drop down of the save in box is:
    Desktop\Todd\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet…\OLKFOE.

But, I can't find this location in windows explorer. I also can’t find it
when I try to drill down directly from the desktop. The Temporary Internet…
and OLKFOE folders either aren’t there or aren’t visible. How do I get vista
to let me see these? I also can't find the desktop folder. In xp, it was in
the documents and setting folder under the user, but vista doesn't show this.

    Thanks,

    Todd

You can change that location anytime you save. Pick something you like.
Vista will suggest that the next time you save. As to AppData, it is a
hidden folder, and you won't see it unless you change the folder options
view to allow it. Anything stored there should be managed by the apps that
put it there. It's not a good place to download to.

    Have a good day.

You know I usually always pick a place like desktop or my docs to save any form I fill out, especially if I have to email them right back. BUT...this time I had 8 forms to fill out that were sent per email. I opened them completed them and then clicked "save as" and made a note of the placement on a piece of paper.
THINKING that I could just follow the trail to the doc's. Well no such luck. I even diabled hidden files, no luck.
For what ever reason they will not resurface...and I did comb through the registry, I will always choose a place to save them now, but it is quite an enigma to me.

If you opened them from within the email and worked on them, when you
saved them, they went into your Temporary Internet Files area - the
    area they originated in.

You need to SAVE them first to your favorite area and THEN edit them
    from that location.
