| | Vista backup help! Hi everybody, I recently formatted and restored my vista home premium system. Before doing so, I made a backup of my files (not complete pc backup) to a network share drive. Now when I try to restore I get the error: The backup file could not be found. Check your hardware configuration or restore from a different backup. (0x8100001A) I did not move my file backup to a new location, and the 'MediaID.bin" file is still there (1kb). When I go to the restore section, I can see all my files in there and select folders or files to restore, however when I try to restore them it fails. Can anybody please help me? I have a lot of email and other data which I need to get back somehow, and I was under the impression that backing them up would allow me to restore them at a later point.. silly me! -- dg175 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ dg175's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/dg175.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/vista-fil...nt/1051453.htm http://forums.techarena.in |

| | Re: Vista backup help! Well, this is a good reason to keep data files backed up in their original format rather than in a special "backup" format. One trick you may try that sometimes works is to simply copy the whole collection of backup files to the disk on which you intend to back them up. Then use the backup program, without having to access the network, to restore them. In the future, use some simple backup programs like the freeware Karen's Replicator or Microsoft's SyncToy to backup your data files automatically in the background, and keep them in their native format. Then you just drag and drop them from the backup to the original location, and you're done. No "restore" function is necessary. Good luck. | | Re: Vista backup help! Thanks I'll give that a shot, but I'm not expecting any better results as I don't think the network connectivity is playing a part in the failure to recover files. I definitely won't be using Vista backup anymore and will try one of those other free options you suggested instead. thanks, -- dg175 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ dg175's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/dg175.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/vista-fil...nt/1051453.htm http://forums.techarena.in |
