Error saving html file

I am doing some webdesign and keep on running into the following error:

When I am saving changes to .html files (which I am editing in Notepad), stored in a folder in Documents, I get the following message:

"Cannot create the C:\...html file. Make sure that the path and filename are correct"

Thinking this is a permissions problem I have added full permissions to my user on the security tab of the folder options. I have also experimented with running the file as an administrator, and turning off UAC. However, to no avail. The file will occasionally save fine, but seemingly completely randomly.

I would greatly appreciate your help in resolving this issue as it is proving a major pain in the arse. Thanks.

Re: Error saving html file

any chance you have the files open elsewhere at the same time and are
locking file access?

Re: Error saving html file

In a sense: I've got the file loaded up in a browser to test what the html looks like as well as having the text version of it open. However, this is pretty essential to experimenting with the html. And someof the time I seem to be able to have both versions open without a problem.

If I do get the error, it also continues after I've exited the browser. If this is causing the problem is it possible to permit the two to be open at the same time?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Error saving html file

Hi, Tsmit.

Vista does NOT like to save files in the ROOT of any drive, especially its
system drive, usually Drive C:\.

We can't tell what the "..." means in your "C:\...html". You probably will
not be able to save "C:\Hello.html", but you should be able to save
"C:\NewFolder\Hello.html" - after creating C:\NewFolder, of course.

Yes, you did say it was "stored in a folder in Documents", but you didn't
mention the full pathname, so...

You can't prove that by me.

I had my downloads set to go to "C:\downloads" and never had a
problem... EXCEPT when I had to do a system restore and then I lost
all the downloads that had occurred since the last system restore.

I have since returned my downloads directory to the default location.

Re: Error saving html file

Hi, Tony.

Sure, C:\downloads\NewFile should work fine. But C:\NewFile probably would
not be allowed - unless an Administrator furnishes the password and insists.

Vista prohibits writing files IN THE ROOT (C:\file.txt), but not in FOLDERS
under the root (C:\folder\file.txt).

Another case: I have on occasion had CCleaner do its thing on the
registry (just testing) and I save the .REG backup file to C:\ without
a problem.

I can save any file I decide to save to the root directory without a
problem.

NOTE: I have UAC turned OFF.

RC - thanks for your reply. Sorry for not being clearer. Unfortunately the file is not stored in the root directory, but in C:\Users\myusername\Documents\Webdesign\webdesign.html so I don't think this can be causing the problem.

Thanks! Toby
