STOP Vista automatic folder expansion in Win Explorer?

I often want to move files from right pane of Win Expl to a different folder shown in the left pane. However, as I drag the file into the left pane, if I'm not "right on" the folder I want, the folder under the mouse will quickly expand. This "loses my place" and I have to collapse the expanded folder and try again. Frustrating!

There is a slight delay before the unwanted folder opens, but not long enough for me to move away from it.

Questions:

1. How can I disable the automatic folder expansion in the left pane when the mouse is over it?

2. Can I instead, increase the time delay before the expansion so I have time to move the mouse to the folder I'm really targeting?

Seems like I've seen the controls for these but can't seem to find them.

Thanks,
Jack

Re: STOP Vista automatic folder expansion in Win Explorer?

I hope you get an answer on the list for this! I've had this problem myself
and it's a pain! It seems to be worse now than in the past so I'm wondering
if some MS update changed something. I poked around in the options but
didn't see anything that looked related to expanding folders.

Re: STOP Vista automatic folder expansion in Win Explorer?

Windows Explorer, down through the years, has always been "just acceptable".
It is not really designed for heave file and folder maintenance. That is why
there is a proliferation of 3rd party file manager programs to accomplish
these tasks. Any of them are more advanced than Windows Explorer.

Do yourself a favor and try Total Commander from http://www.ghisler.com/. It
is free to try and is fully functional "nagware". It is one of the handful
of programs that I have purchased over the years because it is so good. It
just gets the job done. Period!

I have been using it since version 2. It is now up to version 7.04. I have
never had to pay a penny extra for any of the major updates. They are always
free after the small initial purchase price.
