| | RE: Moving Default User (AKA My Documents) locations in Vista, how?? Ok, I have searched the Internet to no avail. Also I have searched these forums to no avail. Under windows XP, I could move the entire "My Documents" folder and have it point to a different location. An example would be D:/Docs/. Where D is an entirely differnet HDD. Bring up explorer in Vista using Win+E. I have tried to right click to bring up the properties of the user folder (immediately under the desktop folder), but there is no option to do so. There is no option to change the location if you navigate to to C:\Users\Username to move the location in the propeties dialogue box when you rightclick. However, if you navigate to the invidual folders (in green) in C:\Users\Username\ you DO have the option to move the location. However, if you do this, it has a very strange affect. I created the following Folder on my D: drive. D:\Vista Docs\ I moved the first folder in my User folder, which was Contacts. When I checked my D: drive the Vista Docs folder had disappeared, and was replaced by the Contacts folder. Strange, as I hadnt deleted the Vista Docs folder, yet it had disappeared from my explorer view. Now, no matter where I tried to move the other Folders in the User folder on the C:/Users/Username to the D: drive, Vista would insist on storing it in the Contacts Directory. In fact, I almost messed up my Vista installation and had to System Restore to recovery the Folders in the C:/Users/Username as I was unable to move them back from the D: drive as they wasnt showing up. I cannot understand how Microsoft has made it so hard to move the default location of Users/Username, when it was so easy in XP. How do I move the default location from C:/Users/Username/... to D:/Vista Docs/... Without going round the twist. Oh, and if your asking me to RegEdit forget it... Having to RegEdit to simple things like this should be relegated to the XP days. Thanks. |
