And now you know one of the reasons that USB thumb drives are not good
permanent backup devices. Your USB thumb drive has died. The only way to
get data off it is to send it to a professional data recovery company. This
will not be inexpensive but only you can decide what your data is worth. My
preference is for Drive Savers (www.drivesavers.com) although there are
others. You can call Drive Savers (or the company of your choice) to see
what the cost would be.

In the future, while USB thumb drives are wonderful and convenient,
important data should be backed up to a hard drive and also burned to
DVD/CD-R.
