Sorting Folder List, Skipping the word "The"

Its impossible hard to search for a solution that involves the word "The." I have a directory that is made up of hundreds of DVD folders. Several of which start with "The" and I would really love to find a way to sort the folders skipping the word "The" without having to rename each folder (ie.."Dark Knight, The")
So if anyone has any ideas or anything Id love to hear it. Id prefer to not use any 3rd party programs if possible.
Thank you

Property:value NOT The

Start here for your info: open Help and Support from your Start button and
in the search box in the Help window type in "Tips for finding files" with

Re: Sorting Folder List, Skipping the word "The"

I am not sure if you understood my question. I do not want to search I just want the list of file folders to list them in alphabetical order ignoring the at the Start of folder titles.

Hi hockyluve,
Because Sorting is just away to narrow a search I got confused.

I'm not sure if your talking about files or folders or both. e.g. > "list
of file folders" "hundreds of DVD folders"
But what I will say in the following text will apply to both files and
folders. aka: subfolders.

You can use other property's in your heading columns to sort, by e.g.
(Title) just one of many possible property's you can *Sort* by, or add
custom property's to each file that you could then sort by.

I think you should delete the word "The" particularly if its the first word
in multiple files/folders name, or for that matter anywhere else in the
file/folder Name.
As administrator I would make the employee that is responsible for having
named these files/folders using "The" as the first word of the file/folder
name correct them. I would see to it they manually remove/delete "the" in
each file/folder Name and set other property in each file. If your talking
about many files/folders, this will teach them and give them a good lesson
in file management and the importance seeing to it each file has other
propriety's set. This will let you are anyone else Find, Sort, Group or
search for files/folders with less efforts.

That being said, there's most likely a way by using Command Prompt included
with
a Vista system, to remove "The" in multiple files/folders names with out
doing them
one at a time.

If someone does not reply to this post with away to use Command Prompt to
get the results you need. Then you may want to consider starting a new post
in this news group and maybe even *cross* post to "Vista.General". You need
to change the Subject and Question to something like, Subject: Delete text
characters from File Name in multiple files. Question could be: In my Vista
HP Sp1 in the Video folder there are 300 .wmv files where the file names all
start with the word "The". Is there anyway using the tools/utility that ship
with Vista to remove "The" from all 300 files at once, short of doing them
one at a time?- You need to change my wording to fit your circumstance and
give details of where these file/folders are located and even provide the
file type
extension e.g.- .mpg, .wm, .wmv .mp3,-etc. If we are talking about files.
Include the name of the folder that these folders your talking about were
created in and the names of its parent folders in your post.

There is of course 3rd programs that you may want to look over and try.
http://rbytes.net/software/rename-fo...ftware-review/ for one.

Having the person that Named those files/folders change each file one, one
at a time will reinforce their understanding of the importance of proper
naming of files/folders and setting other property's as they create any
files/folders on your network in the future.

So my answer is: Change the files/folders Name and don't let anybody use
"The" or words like "The" when Naming files/folders ever again. Those kind
of words tell nothing to you or anyone else about a files/folders contents.

Re: Sorting Folder List, Skipping the word "The"

Thank you for your response Mr. Brown.
All of the items in question are just folders. I would have someone else fix them but technically its my fault, well not really the folders are automatically generated from a file already titled with the name containing the "THE" if that makes sense. I did not really want to just rename them if at all possible because I have another application that is already dependent on the folders. I just wanted to sort so I could easily look through the folder list and compare lists. But I guess renaming them will be workable I would just rather a different solution.
But thank you for your input.

Re: Sorting Folder List, Skipping the word "The"

Give the details of the other application name, version # and the name of
the app that is auto generating the name of these folders someone could have
or know the way to deal with it.
With out details, just like the word "The", words like "automatically
generated" ,"from a file" ,"another application" ,"dependent on the folder"
is really not going to give anyone much of a ideal of what it would take to
come up with a solution that you would like to see. There are 100 million
different application out there. You give all the details in a post of what
you got how it is dependent, what file, even take it from the top. The
steps you take to make what is currently taking place take place.
Personally I would love to know what piece of software causes all folders to
auto place "the" as the first word when creating and naming a folder. You
might want to contact the developers of this software you use and ask them
how to get what you want.
Any way, if you will give the detailed information, name, rank and
horsepower in you details someone will come along with a solution or point
you to a source that may have the right solution.

Re: Sorting Folder List, Skipping the word "The"

Well I left the app names out because they really are not the cause of the problem. It auto generates a folder based on a file name, a movie title. So if the movie is titled "The Abyss" then the folder generated will be titled The Abyss I have looked into having the app fix that the only way it will is if I rename the file before it I run the program which is a possibility for the future but not for the folders I already have. I really only wanted to see if there was a way in the explorer window to have the folder list just skip the first part of a folder title if it starts with the other wise I will just rename all of the folders at the command line i am pretty sure I remember how to do that otherwise I can just write something to that too. I really just didnt want to put this much effort into this, if there was a simple solution.
